Not necessarily, even for women in pop/mainstream music. Kesha, Cyndi Lauper, Amy Winehouse, Alanis, Stevie Nicks, yes Gaga, and many others would all look like women you might see in the city if they hadn't gotten famous and carved out such distinct looks for themselves.

Cyndi Lauper’s career is older than most of this forum, and all the women you mentioned debuted over 13 years ago…

Fair enough - I wouldn't say Olivia, Karol G, Raye, or even SZA are amazingly beautiful either (they all range from average to very pretty, don't get me wrong). But we have had fewer breakout female musicians in general the last 15 years.

Males definitely have it easier. So many ugly male singers today but they do good in the charts. 

There's also beauty privilege in males. You can see that in someone like harry styles. His music is good but he would be less less famous if he were ugly. His looks are a big part of his appeal and one of the reasons why he's so massive.


I personally think everyone in this world can be beautiful with the right styling and stylistic choices and work on their body health and confidence 
all the most beautiful pop girls also have their ugly moments. Beauty is transient.

Yeah I should’ve worded my op better, I was tired. Megan and Tay wouldn’t probably be told they weren’t pretty enough to be singers/rappers like Gaga was or how Cupcakke probably would’ve been had she consulted with a label.

I think all pop girls in some ways are highly helped by makeup.
Thats one of the reasons why they look like supreme olympic goddesses.
So many of them are beautiful clearly but they look more average-standard without strong makeup. 
I think a good glam team-makeup-good clothing-hair is more important today than being naturally stunning-lookin like a high couture model
So everyone can be a superstar with the right direction  me and you
