Jusitn is bigger than katy in overall sales

probably in touring

katy has stronger classics though, justin music gets forgotten until the next song

Justin is the much bigger touring act by a very wide margin.

Okay, and he has like 10 billion more streams on Spotify as a lead artist:rip:

Ok, thanks for the update.

Selling one's catalog for a ton of money is more about marketing than it is actual numbers. "9 #1s and an historic 5 #1s from a single album" probably sounds a lot better to old investors than "10 billion streams". Remember, the people behind this money are old, white dudes who know jack **** about the music industry lol.

katy has actual legit hits bieber's "hits" are quick lil singles fueled by scooter's payola on the radio and autoplay on spotify to make him look big lol

so pretty much the same thing Katy did during the Teenage Dream era when she would spam remixes with high profile features for literally every single she released? :nicole:

I don't think this is something to brag about. She just lost her rights to royalties by selling it :clownny:

no -- not surprised, teenage dream is THAT album/era.

for people curious about why some sells their catalogs: they do win royalties but they win royalties in the long-run, selling their catalogs they get the money NOW. with that they can invest in other ventures and get even more money than they would get in the long run IF they do the right investment.  that's  probably Katy's situation. Also Timberlake.

There's news out there that Bieber got in serious debt for leaving Scooter and that made he sell his catalog.

With that said, i do think selling music catalogs is for artists that don't really have that much ambition anymore for their musical career.

Katy clearly has bigger share on her songs than Justin, he is always a producer/writer replied artist so he never has that much stake in his royalties to begin with.

I wonder why many artists are selling their catalogs lately.

This. I need a detailed explanation of how these deals work.

Of course they make money from royalties, but those deals 'give' in advance what those artists would make in 10 or 15 years, so instead of just waiting, the artists can use that money in the present, invest it in whatever they want and turn that sum into something even bigger right now instead of waiting until 2038. Also, there is a scare nowadays surrounding streaming era and making artists insecure if their music would make the same money in the future, so they just take the deal instead of waiting to see if their royalties get smaller over the years (but imo this isn't accurate, because you wouldn't see these companies investing millions in music catalogs if royalties are actually on decline :rip:)

If they're barely getting royalties, why would anyone buy their catalogs? Doesn't seem like a good investment.

from my understanding artists usually sell for whatever value would their songs most likely generate over their lifetime, but instead of waiting to get old they can cash the check now and enjoy the money while still young.

for the company it's an investment, katy's music will continue to get consumed and therefore generate money. they won't see the return immediately, but it's an asset that has potential for the future. kinda like buying a painting - you lose money purchasing it, but you could sell it for more down the line if it appreciates in value.

Not really. ATRL loves to dunk on Katy, but there was a time when she was the music industry (2009-2014) with #1 after #1 after #1. It was insane. But people here love to pretend that just because an artist flops, they were always a flop. And that couldn't be further from the truth in most cases.

Maybe investors are money laundering, that's probably why they can pay this much to artists even if they'll get too little from royalties?
