Ratviolo Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Damn, get money sis Also why are some people saying this means she’s retiring?

This is why she's getting paid this big amount of money. When artists sell their catalogs, they sell absolutely everything. Is this correct? It depends on the deal. Some artists retain some form of profit participation after selling their music rights, but from how it's worded in the article it does seem like Katy won't receive any royalties from her first 5 albums anymore. Shows who is the true artist and who is manufactured A lot of people fighting tooth and nail because they're not making money from their catalogue sales or only getting a much smaller chunk than they deserve, they literally cannot sell the rights to their music if they wanted to...it's not about being a "true artist." Katy just got in one lump sum more then she would make in a decade of royalties, she's in a strong position. She wasn't scammed or cheated out of her master's like Taylor for example Edited September 18, 2023 by Otter 3 1 1

She'll cross 2B spotify streams in 2023 without any new songs and major push in the last 2 years. Her catalogue is pulling huge numbers considering her peak was around 2014/2015. I think this was a good step for her as it opens new opportunities for younger generations to get to know her as music will now be more included in films, series etc. This can backfire ofc with songs such as IKAG or TGIF.
Vespertine Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 I imagine it was a buy 3, get 2 free sort of situation 12

Blue Rose Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Her team got her a huge deal and it was smart to sell before her next album which will undoubtedly underperform and bring her price even lower
Cloröx Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 So Taylor's nemesis started selling their masters, who's next?
Daddy Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 They released that boxset to make a quick buck and sold the rights off. Queen of money.

But yeah, for us 100 fans left, this really means she is done making music on a level she did 2008-2014. 2B streams x 0.004c a stream (avg 0.003-0.005c a stream on Spotify = $8M per annum 225/8 = 28 years Not a bad deal imo
Sannie Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 I initially wondered how one could sell their life's work like this, but I assume she was not making a ton of money from her music anymore and this deal undoubtedly sets her and her family up for life even if she never sells another a record. When you become a parent, financially securing your child's future is what becomes #1 priority. Good for her.

She doesn't own her master so she probably gets less than $4M a year from the total Spotify payout. This is definitely a good deal for her!

Anti-Hero Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 This makes me so sad. Her catalog is strong. It will make her money for whole lifetime. Why does she have to do this? Urggg

She has a pretty high amount of streams on Spotify for her singles for someone who hasn’t had a Top 10 hit since 2014, a lot of her peers in that same situation would not be getting streamed like she is. Majority of her Top 10s are still getting 500K streams/day or more (besides E.T., POM & WUIV basically lol). BTW idk why but WUIV has a shockingly low amount of recurrent streams per day especially compared to her other top 10s. Nonetheless, she was definitely still making bank on her discography and probably will for the rest of her life.
