Tomb Raider was literally about to be abandoned altogether before Crystal Dynamics took over its development. Core Design literally tried to kill her off for good with The Last Revelation. :rip:

yeah but hey later wanted to make sth different with TRAOD

And they wanted to get rid off her because Edios ordered them to make TR game every year. They were tired and overworked

And they did a terrible job with AOD. I like AOD and have played through it several times. It has one of the best plots in the series. However, the entire foundation of that game is based on a completely broken massively outdated control scheme. What Crystal Dynamics did with TR with Legend and the rest of the LAU trilogy cannot be understated. Tomb Raider was heavily looked down upon by the video game industry and people thought it should have been binned after TR3 really until the LAU trilogy. The survivor reboot trilogy further cemented Tomb Raider's place in modern gaming

It is 100% okay to prefer to classic TR games to the survivor series. But, the survivor trilogy is much more amenable to modern audiences and that's partly why it's the best selling trilogy of the entire series.

I LOVE the classic TR games but a lot of TR fans are straight up delusional when they try to downplay the survivor trilogy :deadbanana4:

The classic games were basically PlayStation exclusives on release date :rip:

Saying the latest trilogy was the best selling one isn’t saying much considering how the market changed. The original games were always best sellers. The latest trilogy kept missing sales expectations and it literally peaked with the first game and sales started going down rapidly.

Also saying the latest trilogy is much better for modern audiences…like how? Yes physically classic Lara didn’t age well and you can tell she was planned in a room with men only but with everything else she was much better as a character on the classics, she was smart, she had an actual personality, she knew what she was doing and her motivations weren’t because mom and or dad which both trilogies from Crystal Dynamics were and they basically dumbed down the character’s personality and removed the IP from any personality whatsoever by doing an Uncharted clone from a gameplay cinematic perspective. It felt like they sat in a room and did all yhe gimmicks that most action adventure games were doing…but Tomb Raider never did them better in anyway.

Also…the fact Lara was always going through some traumatic event where men needed to beat her up and one even tried to rape her for her to be stronger never sits well with me even nowadays. The games were basically torture porn. If this is better for modern audiences…okay.

ps: also the original team were overworked and done with the ip because they were forced to yearly game releases since the games were actual certified hits

The original plan for Tomb Raider III was so that it'll be released for the PS2 launch. Even if they did kill off Lara, she would have made a comeback of some sort.

The LAU trilogy was a very modern take of the classic Tomb Raider formula and had mediocre sales despite the fact that it was extremely cross platform. Also, TR1 was not a PS1 exclusive :rip:. The first one came out on the PS1, Sega Saturn, and PC within the span of a month. TR2 came out on the PC and PS1 at the same time. The Sega Saturn was basically dead at that point. Same for TR3. It being widely available on some of the biggest platforms of the time isn’t a massive limitation, especially given TR1-3 sold insanely well. The series took a massive nosedive in sales as the series got older because it lost its luster. This continued pretty consistently. It got a spark of life again with Legend, but Anniversary is the worst selling mainline title and Underworld underperformed.

The fact is that the original formula had grown tired. Platformers were a LOT more popular when TR first came out. That’s why you had so many games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sonic, Mario, Rayman, etc. clamoring for the spotlight. TR was a grown up version of the platformer trend. Going into the 2000s, the shooter genre took over and TR had to adapt.

That wasn’t the plan for TR3… TR3 came out 2 years ahead of the PlayStation 2.

Keep it relevant and give it sales.

Exactly this. I understand loving the classic games. TR1 and TR2 are some of my favorites of the era. But, it’s obvious the series needed to evolve to stay relevant.

That's not really a Crystal Dynamics exclusive accomplishment. Any other studio would have "saved" the franchise if it copied what other video games were doing at the time and made it easy for the most common person/gamer. Core Design could have done this if they had time to learn the new engine.

One of the Devs said in a live stream a couple of years ago that Tomb Raider III was going to be for the next gen when the PSII was already in the talks. They talked about this during the TRII production.

But they didn’t? They made AOD which was massively outdated in terms of its implementation even if we ignore the bugs and laggy performance which can largely be chalked up to an unrealistic timeline imposed by Eidos.

Besides, the complaint about the Survivor Trilogy is that it deviates too much from the style of the originals. That has less to do with Crystal Dynamics and more to do with the fact that the original style wasn’t translating well with modern audiences (see LAU trilogy). The complaint about the new games would be the same if Core Design did it, so I’m not sure how the last sentence says anything meaningful.

The reboot games often went on sale for like, $3 USD so that definitely boosted the sales figures. :lakitu:

Man the Netflix situation SUCKS. Devil May Cry stans are about to have their Believe moment. They are extremely happy with the trailer (I'm just getting into this franchise so I can only take their word for it).

I did enjoy them for what they were, but I would say the Survivor trilogy is my least favourite carnation of these games. I think the Legend trilogy remains my favourite. Those games were so so good.

I saw all the posts on Sunday and was so annoyed with myself!

Never gone to anything like that ever, and I ******* should!

Get ha back for the new TR.
