The biggest surprise is that they keep giving her the best director award. It was understandable for ATW. But to award The Man and Ant-Hero for directing 

 

That long unfunny dialogue scene in the middle of the anti-hero video is the epitome of awful directing. Everyone standing stiffly shouting their lines

Whether it's fan-voted (e.g., AMA, VMA) or decided by a voting body (e.g., Oscars Academy, Recording Academy), all award shows are inherently a popularity contest. There's no objective way to evaluate art so it always comes down to who has the biggest fanbase, who 'plays the game' (e.g., campaigns for awards), and/or who makes art that appeals to the widest demographic.

 

Award shows are a fun part of pop culture but stans put way too much emphasis on them.
