krustysalt
Both albums are sophomore slump efforts of Olivia and Billie. GUTS is mimicking HTE's performance claimed by most ATRLers Here are the comparisons HTE 35.5M Spotify unfiltered debut (2.21M Ave. streams per track) 0 #1 hit 1 top 50 song on album release week (Title track at #11) Debuts 2 songs on top 10 global Apple Music 86 Metacritic GUTS 60.4M Spotify filtered debut (5.02M Ave. streams per track) 1 #1 hit Predicted to chart all 12 tracks in the top 50 (#1 Vampire & top 3-5 bad idea right) Debuts 7 songs on top 10 global apple music 93 Metacritic In addition, Vampire did significantly more streams on its 60th day (over a week before GUTS releases) compared to HTE's 60th day, the album's "biggest" hit All-American ***** (6.14M), Get Him Back! (5.92M), Lacy (4.81M), Ballad of a HS girl (4.8M), Logical (4.6M), GUTS' album tracks debuted higher than Happier Than Ever (4.42M), a full fledged single Thoughts? houdini
'Guts' wasn't a complete 180 of SOUR in terms of aesthetic and sonic cohesion which helped keep her fanbase satisfied. Yes the music did become more vulnerable and more rock-oriented but it wasn't too drastic of a shift. With Billie's HTE, she went for very uncommercial pre-release singles and quite a lot of them, which by the time the album actually came out like 8/16 songs were already released. Billie's image changed too which just confused her fanbase a lot. She suddenly started yearning for more sex-appeal with a feminine touch, which was the complete opposite of her image during WWAFAWDWG. People liked her for being the goofy green haired girl. Early on in the HTE era, especially with the Vogue cover, the reactions were very polarizing amongst her fanbase. 7 1

Love Again
I don’t think HTE was that big of a sophomore slump. If it really was it would have fallen off completely but two years later it’s still charting on both the Global Spotify Albums chart and the BB200. Billie in her “slump” easily got a 100M tour. The only thing wrong with HTE was its release schedule. Way too many scattered releases and then NOT including everything I wanted

wish
Hate train + controversial image change + risky single choices HTE had a very successful world tour (arenas and stadiums) & Billie just had a global smash this year. You don't need to worry about her! 6 4
JoJo
it’s because the hate Billie got during the HTE is different from the hate Olivia is getting right now. The blonde hair and the new wardrobe caused Billie to lose a significant number of her fans. Olivia is only getting hate from people who believe teenage girls are annoying and from obsessive stans of other artists who don’t listen to her music anyway. Also, GUTS actually had a good pre-album rollout. Hopefully the rollout for BE3 won’t be as messy as HTE’s now that Billie is coming off of a successful tour and WWIMF is a hit. Dephira
HTE pre-release singles killed all the hype she had, luckily her numbers later recovered when people realized that Lost Cause had simply been ahead of its time
Bloodflowers.
Happier Than Ever was more experimental so people initally couldn't handle hearing masterpieces such as Billie Bossa Nova and Oxytocin. But her rock smasha proved everyone wrong and the album did end up being a hit after GP had time to process excellence a bit deeper. 5

bad guy
GUTS is just reaping what HTE sowed. Multiple reviews of it citing Billie and HTE’s influence shows that Not to mention many of the songs trying to emulate the natural, not-forced, pure grunge sound that the latter half of HTE gave effortlessly (Olivia’s noisy shouting on All American ***** comes to mind) provide that once again Billie is the standard. But welcome back out of hiding! How has the absolute backfire with WWIMF’s global dominance been? 12
