not people here thinking Modi is some sort of anti-colonial freedom fighter

this is good in theory but we know Indian nationalists only do this to position India as the next big superpower. this isn't about sticking it to the imperialist countries, this is about becoming one of them.

This tea. Previous presidents of the Philippines have used similar strategies in the past to promote nationalism.

Why are y’all acting like countries haven’t changed names before?? :skull:

If India decides to call itself Bharat, the rest of the world (that matters) will follow

This ^^^, like these colonial names haven't replaced original names before. Türkiye (Turkey duh), has changed and there is a big discussion now New Zealand where I'm backpacking, to change its Dutch colonial name to Aotearoa.

Welcome to NZ, come hang with me in Wellington - and this is definitely not a "big" discussion lol, it's been ongoing for decades. It'll probably happen eventually.

So, West Indies -> West Bharaties?

I am honestly more surprised that the words "Indian" and "Indies" (when referring to Native Americans and the Caribbean) in the Western Hemisphere have continued to stick around, tbqh.
