VOSS Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Quote India was buzzing with speculation over rumoured plans to scrap official use of the country’s English name, after a state-issued invitation to the G20 summit referred to it as Bharat. The government of the prime minister, Narendra Modi, has been working to remove lingering symbols of British rule from India’s urban landscape, political institutions and history books, but this could be the biggest move yet. India hosts the G20 summit this weekend, and world leaders have received an invitation to a state dinner hosted by the “president of Bharat”. Members of his Hindu nationalist ruling party, Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), have previously campaigned against using the name India, which has its roots in western antiquity and was imposed during the British conquest. The government has called a special session of parliament for later in the month, but remains tight-lipped about its legislative agenda, but the broadcaster News18 said unnamed government sources had told it that BJP lawmakers would put forward a special resolution to give precedence to the name Bharat. brraap Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Well that was the old name before Britain changed it, but it’s still a very Hindu nationalist idea for a country that claims to be secular. 2
ichabe Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 It's hilarious how Bharat means Western in my country 3

Gaia Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 2 minutes ago, Flomik said: Why would they care what English speakers think? More than just English speakers, due to India being the main name used internationally and translated into languages, they’d have to change their name in most languages. And yeah, good luck with that. No one is going to just cross out “India” in all textbooks across the world and what not. That’s a way harder change than just announcing it. And they’d have no way of policing everyone to using it. They can do whatever they want, just saying it’s not gonna just magically make people stop calling them India 2

Pendulum Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 I understand their feelings towards exonyms (even though in most cases there is no problem with them) but this is logistically difficult.
