Songs were rarely certified more than gold/platinum back then.

Because music consumption was different. People bought more albums back then.

FANTASY coming for Diamond. :WAP:

Mariah has now sold 75 million songs in the US according to the RIAA. That's massive for a person debuting in 1990.

Mariah has probably sold 100 million songs between the US / UK / Japan and Canada alone. She's getting up there with the singles greats.

There’s no way for me to think that AYNAF was only certified Gold in 2023… I thought it had to be a Platinum single at least back then :biblionny:

Anyway, well deserved for Mimi:clap3:

No, I don't that was the breakdown. I think for older acts they start with digitals and physicals and then use SPS. Sometimes they do it all at once.

Fantasy does not get massive streams to move 3M units from streaming in 3 years.

It's a shame they didn't update the certs for legends during the digital era more so that they can just go straight into SPS.

I think Mariah profits most from streaming in US when it comes to the 90s artists

Obviously, Fantasy did not start at 0 in like 2013 or so. The song shipped 2 million physical singles and sold around 1 million digital tracks. The rest must come from streaming.

Fantasy is coming for 320 million streams on Spotify and may have just as much if not more on other streaming platforms, most notably Apple Music.

Fantasy is currently on the verge of consistently gaining 2,5 million streams on Spotify per week. It is her 2nd greatest gainer outside of Xmas music and WBT.

Next year it will surpass 500 million on Spotify.

Ok, maybe my point did not land of explaining why there was a certification 3x over three years and how that wasn't because it sold 3M units but rather how certifications tend to go for legendary acts. The same thing happened with a few of Whitney songs. I don't understand why it's done but it's been noticeable.

As a stan, I know Fantasy is one her singles which sold ~2M ish in shipped single sales i was just trying to breakdown why it doesn't denote 3M equivalent units over 3 years.

Hopefully, you didn't take it as shade or anything. I still don't understand why they took their time when it came to certification over the digital sales domination for older songs but at least they are catching up now that they have to include physical, digital, streaming units and others.

Very surprised by Fantasy, 6x platinum is impressive for a 1995 song! :clap3:

One of the best R&B ballads ever, and one of the best songs in her discography, but the haters won’t admit it.
