Doja makes history, PTTR first solo female rap song to go #1 on Spotify US

You’re right that it underperformed.  But we’re also right that it wasn’t the commercial lead, lol.  They didn’t want nor expect that song to carry the album.

Lead doesn’t just mean “the first song” in this context.  Artists drop buzz singles too (less common now, but it happens), not everything is meant to smash commercially.

Doja has made Sony/RCA so much money, and had very little investment upfront (thanks TikTok).  It’s not that surprising RCA would give her a bit of artistic freedom atp.

Not a ''commercial lead'', but it was promoted through major playlisting, a music video and billboards? Streaming is a way more important key-metric for commercial success on the charts than radio. Calling it a ''not commercial lead'' is borderline gaslighting.

''Attention'' obviously isn't a radio-friendly song so they didn't bother sending it for adds at first, but if it had connected with audiences on other platforms who knows would they have tried it? We'll never know I guess since it failed to do so.

Maybe from a stan POV that’s the case, but pushing to radio is the indicator for the label’s definition of what is a lead single. And radio impressions are still much stronger on the charts and keeping you afloat.

We knew Attention wasn’t being promoted to radio like a couple days after its release. Within that time frame Attention was getting unsolicited adds, had a strong Spotify debut and positive reception. Nothing immediately showing they needed to move on. Then Doja herself confirmed it wasn’t leading the record, before we had teasing of PTTR a couple weeks later - it already having a video shot and deal set to go.

It’s not a bizarre concept. I know the more exciting commentary is to damper her success but there is such thing as buzz and it did its job. Promoting that buzz single is fine.

Even Need to Know was just a buzz single when it initially dropped.

PTTR was the one with billboards, not Attention.

TTH placement and playlisting doesn’t cost money though.  I worked at a major label.  It’s based on past performance on playlist (analytics), along with label making a case for its position (commerce team does this).  Doja has had back-to-back hits for like two years straight…all of which performed well on TTH. She could probably fart on a song + get high placement on TTH.  :skull:

Her last lead had an immediate radio impact date…why didn’t Attention?  But yet PTTR did…?  Because….it was the actual commercial lead.

I do think it it did well, it would’ve gotten more single-like treatment.  So that’s why I say it was an underperformance…but I don’t think it was meant to carry the album like ppl making it seem.

They literally treated Attention the exact opposite of how they treated KMM out the gate.  But instead did that for PTTR

I get what you're saying man, but let's not forget that it could've received airplay even without an adds date or radio deal, which I don't know if she did. But considering it charted for only 3 (? :skull:) weeks, it obviously didn't.

Let's move on. I'm really happy she continues to have success even if she's highly polarizing with her social media presence lately.

…which is why I said it was an underperformance.  The two things aren’t mutually exclusive, lol.

As long as you got a General Public hit you don’t need all the annoying Stans lol good for her, I like the song though the same makes a lot of it.
