Barbie's Growing Popularity in Saudi Arabia: A Unique Trend in the Middle East

It's so emotional to see how much the movie has resonated with women across the world, even in countries with governments that are fundamentally made to oppress women as hard as possible. The fact so many men got so angry at a movie with such surface-level feminism says so much; the number of women on all sides of the spectrum who have lowkey come together and celebrated 'girlhood' has made me happy :heart2:

Also read the article, good on Saudi for making some strides in allowing women to do more stuff :)

A movie with shallow views of feminism being the defining film of our generation makes sense.

A generation Needs a blockbuster with jokes about the third wave of intersectionalist feminism only 4 people can understand. Makes sense.

Also movies are not Just views, cinema is a visual art and it's great cinema for that.

It’s better than another random marvel movie that has ZERO substance and requires zero brain cells to enjoy.

I struggle to find a reason to ban this movie

it doesn’t take any stance other than “men have feelings to” so what’s to be mad about what on earth ?

Love to hear this :heart2:  Saudi Arabia is opening up a lot more, I would love to visit one day

Women in politics must resonate with women in Saudi Arabia as they are currently fighting from scraps to get into positions of power with so many pushbacks

The fact you think this is a drag when even it's "shallow" views of feminism have created such a backlash amongst men.

This movie doesn't do a favour to men nor women, but at least men have realised it bc its not targeted to them, and they are not expected to worship it. I don't understand how a woman like Greta with excellent movies like Little Women or Lady Bird can fail so miserably at making a feminist commentary on a mainstream movie.

The fact that this movie is doing well in Saudi Arabia, of all places, should show you that movies like this are still very much needed and important in a lot of places. Privileged Americans and Europeans often forget that media with a political message isn’t always made for them only.

Sounds like you're one of those men feeling insecure about it. :fan: We love to see it.

I wish the women there rose up and demanded their rights. To hell with traditional gender roles.

I’m saudi and just wanted to update you stop reading your media women now have most of their rights if not all

they can leave their families if they wanted to and get protected by the police they can wear whatever they want drive and travel without an authorization literally every thing changed for years now

there's no difference now between the two genders and it makes me happy to witness a fast changing in a really short time
