Both are politically charged songs is the point, despite messaging being on opposite sides of the spectrum.

Oh please :toofunny3:

This is America is a song that people legitimately loved, it went viral not just for the political messaging, even if it played a role. No one bought that song just to anger conservatives. This song on the other hand is going viral just because conservatives want to "own the libs". It's gonna fall like a rock after a few weeks at best and won't have the same kind of longevity that This Is America had.

This is America fell fairly fast compared to other hit songs at the time.

Yeah, I know a lot of people like it, but the political message to it definitely did help. I was there at the time, I remember it like it was yesterday.

You know things aren't completely black or white? They can be combinations of both. There's nuance to the world. I don't know why you say one song was 100% due to musical merit, yet the other song was 100% due to the political message. Both songs have people that genuinely like them, both songs have people who just wanted to support the message. Whether the ratio for each is 90:10, or 50:50, or 25:75 or whatever is up to debate, but the sweeping generalisations and the black and white thinking rub me the wrong way. People need to try and put themselves in the shoes of others. I can understand how both songs can appeal to people. I can admit both songs have people who genuinely love them musically. We don't need to be like robots saying One Side = Good, One Side = Bad all the time. Things are a bit more complex than that in the real world.

Wait not verse 3 making fun of fat people too.

This man literally looks pot-bellied himself like the kind of gout-suffering stereotypes of people in Appalachia. What is the obsession with fat people from uhhh the "North"? :rip:

Nobody fat shames like 2 very specific groups of people:

1. People that used to be fat

2. People that are "small fats". He said 300lbs for a reason.

Song stinks anyways but this will keep happening cause these listeners open their purse for the songs lol, that doesn't mean sales should be removed though.

This Is America is one of the weakest #1s of the 2010s. It had very little longevity and it’s recurrent streams are in the pits but ok :rip: The video + obvious political commentary/controversy is what made the song viral. That was the reason for its success in the first place.

And people clearly like TTIAST and this garbage as well otherwise it wouldn’t be rising on the charts. Two things can be true at once.

Calendar year, 1975:

BJ Thomas - Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song (April 26)

Freddy Fender - Before the Next Teardrop Falls (May 31)

John Denver - Thank God I'm a Country Boy (June 7)

Glen Campbell - Rhinestone Cowboy (September 6-13)

John Denver - I'm Sorry (September 27)

(And for good measure, CW McCall's "Convoy" hit #1 on January 10, 1976, making it 6 country songs in 9 months.)

Any 12 month period, 1980-1981 (actually 4 months, between November and March):

Kenny Rogers - Lady (November 15-December 20, 1980)

Dolly Parton - 9 to 5 (February 21 & March 14, 1981)

Eddie Rabbitt - I Love a Rainy Night (February 28-March 7, 1981)

all dem classic from 1980-1981

Its quite clear that the country audience (which tbh is really huge) has completely shifted to streaming.

Country has always been huge in h100, tho they mostly pollute the bottom 50. But the fact that they generally chart well says it all. Them moving to streaming full time has finally demonstrated the size and breadth of that audience.

The makeup of the chart as a whole feels so different than it used to. You used to have huge total point amounts in the top 10, probably because people only responded en masse to what the labels were heavily investing in  — iTunes banners, radio deals, MVs, etc.

Streaming and social media leads to more choice and less attachment to what is promoted through traditional methods. So you overall have “weaker” songs point-wise as the consumption is spread more evenly across many songs vs lopsided with the top 10/20. And that is precisely the problem — a #1 can be gamed by a small portion of the population by mass streaming/purchasing. They need to reapportion the points for sure and maybe remove sales. IDK what else could be done though… you’d have to have a counter movement to stream/purchase other songs on the chart.

Which leads me to my next question — I always hear complaints about oh why did my fave flop? If literally a few thousand gays purchased a song, you’d have a top 20 hit for your fave. Are we just too lazy now??

It's been a Cruel Summer on the American charts, indeed. Like WTF is going on there? All these country racists and weirdos popping out of nowhere :deadbanana4:.

At least 10 different Jordan Peterson videos, but can't wait for people in here to keep trying to explain how this song isn't actually a rightwing song / isn't clearly being driven by almost exclusively rightwing support :toofunny3:

This situation is real shady when looking into it. Someone reached out to him to write the song.

All I know is that Drake will release some time before October 27, so he won’t get overshadowed by Taylor again.

lol at the overreactions here. Cruel Summer has an excellent chance of getting several weeks at #1, even if it doesn't go #1 this week. I mean, a good performance of CS at the VMAs will get it 5+ weeks at #1 like Truth Hurts a few years ago.

It’s peaking on radio and there are some big releases imininent
