I don’t need Olivia to be an alt girl because its superior to pop. She already has shown that she has interest in alt music and would take her music down that path. The only people surprised when she brings these flavors to her pop music are those that undersell them. She has made very clear where her taste lies and she will accommodate her music to that the more time passes. She’s 19 and she’s already exploring things her pop peers are not doing….. she’s touching references her peers (Tate, Sabrina, GAYLE, etc) are not. So YES i will praise her for bringing these references to her music and not delivering dull records 

The fact that Melodrama is an altpop record does not mean Lorde is an alternative artist  Lorde has always described herself as pop, the whole “alternative” gimmick was pushed on artists like her, Lana and Marina back in the day simple because they weren’t making 2010s EDM Calvin Harris music. The “alternative” label just stuck and it is how people recognize them now. I remember when Royals first came around, she was being nominated in Rock categories because people didn’t know where to fit her pop minimalist style in. That’s why people saw her as “alternative”, because she was not a typical pop artist.

 

I don’t see Billie Eilish as an alternative artist, I just think she’s an edgy popstar, but even still I can understand why she would be labeled as that by her fans but Olivia? She would be alternative TO WHAT if her music sounds pretty standard to what we hear today? Because her “inspirations” from these alternative artists you’re claiming she has are not translating into alternative music — and they don’t have to lol She could be inspired by them and STILL make a pretty great pop album.It will be cool if one day she drops a left inclined record with an actual alternative approach, she’s still young, but so far — from the material she put out — she’s a pop artist. And that’s great, good for her. This new song rocks, way better than the lead single imo.

I think you haven’t streamed the top 50 songs in Spotify if you think what Olivia is doing is standard for charts. It’s not the most out there music around, just not what’s popping and the charts don’t lie.
 

You are accusing me of trying to add an extra weight to the word alternative by latching to Olivia, but I think you are the one putting alternative in a pedestal. Alternative Music is not the same as experimental music. It’s not a literal alternative to mainstream music of the time either 💀 Alternative Music has become a genre in itself based in rock trends from late 70s punk rock all the way to the late-90s with post-grunge. There were elements of this in some songs in SOUR already …. like G4U main guitar playing for the chorus is legit college rock jangle pop indebted. She’s expanding elements here in her pop sound. You just sound pressed that I mentioned alt icons alongside her name, but you can google. Everything I typed happened. Whatever you feel like it doesn’t change the fact that people like Patti Smith and Alanis co-signed Olivia and she was catching Tori with Annie Clark. Or that Elephant is her fave album and she has alt influences. Like whats not clicking??? I did like the switch on Lorde being alternative

i gave in, and i love it. miss girl is giving something different 

 

it’s quite catchy for a song that’s not an “easy listening” track. the lyrics are relatable (as expected) but it’s just kinda hard to understand her talking. i feel like the delivery is quite confusing that it could hinder it translating to memes and blow up like her other songs. but i could see it being used on tiktok from the sound alone, who knows.
