Original Thread Title: Why is How Do You Live underperforming in Japan?

According to r/boxoffice,

It keeps falling in daily grosses as well, the reception has been mixed in Japan - yet it being the last Hayao movie I thought more people would tune in.

Quote

It's probably going to be the lowest grossing Miyazaki film in the last 30 years. It's probably going to finish around $45-60M.

The last Miyazaki movie and it seems to have made no noise in Japan outside the initial opening weekend, why?

no success!

it’s not a mystery!

Ghibli revealed absolutely nothing about it aside from its source material

Literally no screen grabs, trailers, or even a press conference, all basic things necessary to promote a film :rip:

I thought I read that reception was generally fine, so I imagine it’s a consequence of their promotional choices mentioned above.

i fear people already spent their money on barbie

I’ll see it but probably not in theaters

Mixed WOM. It had a very strong opening so the studio Ghibli fans showed up but the story doesn’t seem to be connecting with the casual audience as much.

Most Ghilbi movies are family movies and appeal to both kids and adults and from what I read this is not a family movie, but leans more towards Grave of the Fireflies side.

no promo, no performance

No promo. Also I think Ghibli just tanked their reputation with the 3D animation fiasco so audiences are hesitant.

Also, the novel is in part a breakdown of a post-WWII Japan, so I honestly do think the lack of promotion was in response to the spendthrift of promotions that Oppemheimer received

from the audience reviews I read so far, it seems like HDYL is an arthouse film that isn’t easy to understand, hence the mixed reactions and low box office gross. It’s opening the Toronto Film Festival, so I think the critics will love it.

Maybe you should ask the Japanese since literally no one else has seen it

There's been literally zero promotion before or after the movie's opening, it's not surprising that it's underperforming.

Plus, everyone that watched it says it's not the usual family movie that Miyazaki became know for over the last 20-30 years.

no matter how his films perform, Hayao Miyazaki will always be the absolute genius of animation.

Is the Conan series still going :rip:

I mean, does it count as underperforming if the movie didn’t have a marketing budget over the budget of the film itself like every other blockbuster?

This. It's their own fault.

I didn't know this existed, a quick Google search explained why.

I love the Ghibli movies.
