Jotham Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Quote "The decision to join the (new) Silk Road was an improvised and atrocious act" that increased Chinese exports to Italy without having the same effect on Italian exports to China, Mr Crosetto told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. He said Italy now needs to work out how to get out of the deal without damaging relations with Beijing. "The issue today is: how to walk back (from the BRI) without damaging relations (with Beijing). Because it is true that China is a competitor, but it is also a partner," Mr Crosetto said. As Beijing had become increasingly assertive on the world stage, Italy would have to think about how to withdraw "without producing disasters", he said. Read more
Communion Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 If the fascist Italians hate it, it then must be good. 1
Tropez Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Italy is some irrelevant country. I am sure China does not care about losing them. The shift to the right is emblematic of a country that is grasping for power in the world stage.

Y’all are missing the point, Italy didn’t gain anything from this initiative, as mentioned in the OP. Most EU countries are not going to benefit from this as the typical BRI investments veer towards the needs of underdeveloped nations, not a country like Italy with some of the best infrastructure in the world. It never made sense for them to join. Edited July 31, 2023 by Archetype 1

Pikachoo Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 yes Italy stand up to the evil Chinese. La amiamo di nuovo 1

What is it that the US does when “helping” someone that you’re referring to? The US doesn’t look to provide infrastructure investment to nations with superior infrastructure. That’s why I’m saying it made zero sense for Italy to join the BRI.

ZIVERT Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I’m sure China will have a reasonable response to this

The shift to the right is emblematic of a country that is grasping for power in the world stage. Italy has the eighth-largest nominal GDP in the world, the ninth-largest national wealth and the third-largest central bank gold reserve. It ranks highly in life expectancy, quality of life,[34] and healthcare.[35] The country has been described as the "least of the great powers", and it has a significant role in regional[36][37] and global[38][39] economic, military, cultural, and diplomatic affairs. Italy is a founding and leading member of the European Union, and it is in numerous international institutions including the NATO, the G7, the Uniting for Consensus and many more. The source of many inventions and discoveries, the country is considered a cultural superpower and has long been a global centre of art, music, literature, science and technology and fashion.[40] It has the world's largest number of World Heritage Sites (58), and is the world's fifth-most visited country.

This doesn’t mean anything. In Europe, France, Germany and the UK are the main global players. Italy is not in that club and hasn’t been for a long time. They are largely irrelevant in the world stage.

China is seeking to have influence in many countries, large and small. They definitely care about more than just France, Germany and the UK.
Velvet Night Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Good, leaving critical logistics and infrastructure in de facto Chinese control was always risky at best, foolish at worst.

And they lost a partner who wouldn’t even side with China regardless of the circumstances as Italy is a very staunch Western country. China isn’t losing much my losing Italy.

No, but Italy has top-notch world-class infrastructure for its size and population, much better than what the US has provided to its own citizens. There is literally zero reason nor need for Chinese or US investment to "help" develop Italian infrastructure. Idk why ya'll keep ignoring this.
