PoisonedIvy Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 How does this affect my trip to London next August I’ve already never traveled internationally, adding a layer to it is terrifying for me

But I'd really like to be sure so I don't get turned around next year either...

Thanks guys, I knew the UK wasn’t a part of the EU but I was worried they might still implement this anyway. For now I will just hope they don’t, I need this to go smoothly lol

If you want to enter the Schengen area. The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area. It does not apply on your current trip to London. Edited July 25, 2023 by katykater 1

Some of us have to send all of our documents (employment, financials, etc) to get a simple visa to go anywhere. 1
ATRL Moderator Azulito Posted July 25, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted July 25, 2023 Honestly just sounds like a money grab but this is fair. The US charges $21 for countries in the Visa Waiver Program and much more for those that aren't. It really should be reciprocal.

I think this has something to do with US citizens going to Europe through less technically or process-savvy EU countries who don't have strict border crossing practices and then overstaying the 90 day limit.
NEX Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 I had to do this on my both trips to the states. It's no biggie, but also a small annoyance. Just a cash grab from both sides, but more importantly data collection.
Gaia Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 Glad I went to Europe 4 times in the last year and have no plans to go back soon.

The UK are developing their own ETA though, it just means you need to complete a form and pay £10 (about $13). It's unclear when it will be fully implemented. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta - It's less than $10, if you can't afford this then you can't afford a holiday. 1

Not this lashing It wouldn’t be the money I’d be worried about in any case, I just don’t wanna miss any steps that are necessary for international travel. I already don’t know “”everything”” I’m “supposed” to do, so additional new things being added is just something I’m trying to stay on top of is all! But thank you, this is helpful info!

I wasn’t specifying you, I just meant the users who were doing the most. I realise it’s a pain in the arse, I recently had to do one for New Zealand and was worried it might not get approved in time but luckily everything was fine. Have a good trip to London! It should be pretty straightforward for US travellers so don’t worry too much. 1
