I randomly listened to this album via HomePod recommendation and I'm so amazed by it! I'm a Swiftie and Joni reminds me so much of folklore/evermore eras. Is Joni Mitchell one of Taylor Swift's musical influences? Now... I can't stop comparing Taylor Swift to Joni Mitchell's vocal delivery and songwriting!

Do you like Joni Mitchell ATRL?

Never had heard her name before Taylor mentioned her and definitely the GP doesn't know about her either.:bird:

the emotional spectrum in her music extends far beyond the bombasticized teenage angst Taylor packages differently in each album so no, Taylor doesn’t achieve what Joni achieved with Blue.

We already knew it's RED?

A closeup of Taylor Swift donning red lipstick. She looks downwards as she appears to contemplate deeply.220px-Bluealbumcover.jpg

Also fun fact: Joni released eight albums in the 70s, I fear that's what Taylord trying to achieve this decade. :gaycat:

Ladies of the Canyon - folklore
Blue - evermore
For the Roses - MIDNIGHTS

Taylor is much more in the vein of Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch than Joni Mitchell tbh. I don’t see much Joni in her at all.

Joni's Blue was what Taylor did with Red. While folklore is her Carole King's Tapetry.

I don't see the Joni Mitchell influences in folklore as much as everyone claims, but it's a great classic album and Taylor has obviously been influenced by her

Joni Mitchell Thinks Taylor Swift Has "High Cheekbones" and Not Much Else to Offer as an Actress

She also took aim at Taylor Swift, who was floated to play her in a movie, saying: 'I've never heard Taylor's music. If she's going to sing and play me, good luck'

Folklore is what folklore pretended to be

No. She hasn't reached Joni's lyrical freedom yet. Lana is a lot closer to Joni than Taylor. Folklore was still super digestible and accessible. Maybe once Taylor gets older and starts truly flopping she may record a proper mature and unconstrained album. At the moment she is still fully in the pop realm and never left it. And this is coming from someone who really liked Taylor since her debut era.

I think Taylor wanted to recreate NFR with folklore and Melodrama with Midnights.

How are you only listening to Blue now? :bird:

I’ve read a piece before about how “Red” was supposed to Taylor’s “Blue” — and it’s apparently linked with Taylor discovering Joni’s music right after Speak Now and being obsessed with her. Wish I could find it.

Other than both being blonde blue-eyed white singer-songwriters from North America there's little similarity.

True.

Joni Mitchell was born in Canada

In my opinion, Folklore has more Alanis Morissette influences than Joni.
