Apparently it would be offensive to people who live with those laws who then have to suffer retaliation, so overall protesting/attacking those laws is determinantal to the victims who are fighting the good fight (well, they would if it wasn't for that capital punishment thing but don't think too deep)

Multiple people in this thread have done just that, by saying that the lives of Malaysian queer people will be affected by this stunt, you're literally doing both. Try some reading comprehension.

I admitted missing it and still get attacked like this. You’re disgusting.

There's literally a tweet in the OP by a Malaysian queer person talking about this. It's quoted by hundreds of other queer people in Malaysia. All of them saying that this will severely affect them and hurt them. But I'm sure some gays on ATRL know better :cm:

I'll do the work for y'all

White people from ATRL for the first time in your lives, you have the chance to actually listen to the people affected:

Not those twitter users using Matty as a scapegoat for how their government and country dehumanizes the LGBTQ+ community in Malaysia. So, the ones in power do the most to go against the LGBTQ+ community, but suddenly they complain about a random artist? Place that energy where it belongs: into the ones who actively opress them. There's no amount of 'white male' rants to justify it, and I say this as someone who dislikes Matty

Also not those users literally supporting homophobic laws just for the sake of it. If this is in ATRL I don't want to know how ultra-conservative forums look like :biblio:

I understand the good intentions and wanting to help the LGBTQ+ community there etc.....but **** like this always backfires. It does absolutely nothing and only leads to more crackdown and attacks on the already struggling local queer people. Why don't they understand that?

It's like those journalists/activists during the World Cup thinking they're helping queer people in the MENA region only to end up making it x10 worse for people there while they went back to their western, progressive lands where it's safe and legal to be themselves. Let's think before doing stupid and dumb ass **** like this. You can speak up and maybe donate to local organizations/activists to help them fight youth homelessness, HIV, suicide and mental health problems, etc if you actually care and want to help. Not ******* kissing another straight man to protest. Change always comes from within.

I think most of you are misunderstanding this. It is the law that homosexuality is illegal. So why don't we, as a community and allies respect those laws until it is decriminalised.

i dont know if two men kissing in public makes it harder for so called lgbt activists to fight for the rights then what they can do to make it for the better

Because Malaysia is more conservative unlike Western and you can’t simply expect a drastic 180 degree of change. What he did is simply throwing oil into fire as political situation in the country is heated by upcoming state election. The current gov does not support LGBTQ agenda but they are way way more tolerable than the opposition, now Matt just gave the latter more chance to win the election which is a real nightmare for LGBTQ community there.

Exactly! Respect the laws and fight for action. He should have been doing this at the US. The US and the UK are way more alike.

But siding with an homophobic country and saying laws are laws :deadbanana4:

It is because laws were broken that the vast majority of users on this website have their basic human rights, access to public services, and more.

He knew what he was doing, he did the same thing in Dubai and good for him. I fully support religious freedom but not at the expense of gay people having human rights. Homophobia is not a culture even if this isn't the best way to stop it.

he really is the scapegoat ha

"why the more conservative party is going to win the election? because MATTY HEALY kissed a man on stage!" :redface:

whats the real elephant in the room? if your people cant stand 2 men kissing in public, what milder action you need to do to change the tide? use your energy to think about that question, instead of hating someone at least trying to bring a positive message, performatively or not.

Because that's exactly what will happen next month, my TL already full of opposition cybertroopers attacking the gov and LGBTQ community. Matt will get away with his performative activism, back to his privilege country but the community in here will suffer the fallout.
