I used to think this was great news until I found out that stem cells transplants are extremely dangerous and many patients end up dying :(

I was about to say it.. Stem cells transplants is not an easy ride, you have to receive a high dose of chemotherapy that suppress your immune system before the transplant, it's risky with tones of painful side effects.

This still remains great news but yes this needed to be underlined.

Is it worth the risk? Just wear protection for fucks sake. BUT this is great for people who already have it and need a cure, if it works!

As someone with HIV, seeing everyone in here saying “no more PrEP” because you'll just be able to get cured now (or potentially soon) is highly offensive and insensitive. A disease is a disease. Until there is a vaccine, everyone needs to take precautions.

This is amazing, though.

This plus the fact these treatments likely won't be affordable to most people or covered by insurance / only available for those with more advanced cases. The cost of antiretrovirals which are completely safe vs a complicated procedure that could have long-term negative effects.

CCR5-delta32" is a deletion mutation of a gene which only 1% of the total population has two copies of this gene and individuals who carry two copies of this genetic mutation are immune to Smallpox, The Bubonic Plague (Black Death) and resistant to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Interesting, I didn’t know about this.

Incredible strides being made. :clap3:

It’s only a matter of time until they find a cure… just a couple of years ago, it was impossible for an hiv positive person to be undetectable

now he's gonna have to take PrEP instead of his daily meds

They are the same, truvada for example can be given in all cases (pep, prep, hiv+), the only thing when an HIV negative person who takes pep or prep gets infected with HIV, it means that the virus was resistant to those drugs, and therefore, new HIV drugs must be given.

Same thing in the case of undetectable people whose their virus becomes resistant to the hiv drugs they are taking.

It's weighing the risks vs benefits because these people already have a cancer that qualifies them for the stem cell replacement. they just also happen to have HIV which gets cured by the treatment for the cancer.
