Cheers Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 I know which body part of Andrew's i'd want to see rise first 6
Happylittlepunk Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Oh it’s going to be good. He is a great cast and his monster make-up department is top notch. I am going to assume Andrew will play Dr.Frankenstein and Oscar Isaac will play the monster?
James_Dean Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Del Toro and Mia Goth... I feel a masterpiece incoming 5

ATRL Moderator feelslikeadream Posted July 16, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted July 16, 2023 Wonder if they'll revise the incest vibes from Victor and Elizabeth. My students are always super freaked out by that. 1

Even back when Shelley wrote this, Elizabeth provides a brutal awakening / pivot for the story, and her relationship with Victor is meant to be seen as a quandary. Let's not dial down the creepiness for kids. Not everything has to be family friendly.

To be fair, early 19th century readers would def have been less critical of their pseudo-sibling relationship; the contemporary sources on the book don't discuss that aspect of the novel, making it seem like it wasn't that surprising to readers of the day. My concern is not for "kids" necessarily, but more for the many people out there who are quick to find one problematic element of a person/relationship, and then dismiss it outright. Of course there are many reasons to criticize Victor's behavior in the novel, and his falling in love with Elizabeth doesn't even crack the top 20 problems I have with him But you just know people will be like, "He GrOoMeD hEr" and then not be able to discuss the relationship with any degree of nuance. I assume the people working on this know that, so I'm just curious to see how/if they'll adapt the story to make it less blatant. 1
