Troye Sivan - 'Something to Give Each Other'

Listened to it in full and as with his last album, I really wish he put a few more songs on here. Im sure he has some of them made but he must purposefully keep the album short (32 mins!!)

Its a good album overall though I definitely feel as if its several steps lower than Bloom due to the fact that this album has a less varied sound on the songs. In Bloom each song, even the slow ones, felt distinct, while here some of the last few tracks seem to drip right into each other and even have similar instrumentals that make it a less engaging listen for me. I was hoping he'd go full dance-pop/Kylie kinda music but im starting to see that Troye will never drop his low or mid-tempo moments and thats fine. while they seem to be just okay for the most part, Cant Go Back Baby is easily a highlight for its lyrical content. I was trying so hard to get a clue on what he was talking about so i didnt assume the worse, but I wasnt wrong after all. Its one of his best written songs.

As overall songs though, Got Me Started might be my favorite followed by Rush and they really make the album great. One of your girls is a good song and whats the time where you are is a solid track too. Will definitely give this a listen again very soon and im just happy Troye is back. its been too long.

Claiming art as immature is not fair. It’s all perspective. It’s about meeting the person where they are at in their expression. Taylor Swift has the same Peter Pan complex but no one bats an eye cuz the songwriting is tight.

Troye obv isn’t close to that level but he has a POV at least and is a strong writer. Especially melodically, his choruses are pop music done RIGHT

I'll probably add Easy, In A Dream, STUD (his best song) and Wait on the album to have a few more uptempos

None of those sound anything like this album lmao

The fact that these songs are about the same relationship :weeps:

I think my top 5 so far in no particular order is

-Rush
-What's the time Where You Are?
-One of Your Girls
-Can't Go Back, Baby
-How to Stay With You

It’s so interesting to be listening to him from the beginning and see how far he’s come since Happy little pill. This album honestly got me a bit emotional as in a way I’ve grown up alongside his music and to see him be so unabashedly himself is really inspiring and bittersweet as i wish i had as much confidence etc. I think One of your girls is VOTY contender :jonny4:

I HARDLY disagree, putting STUD right after Honey is an experience.

Which relationship

It’s not even a Peter Pan complex, although he will have difficulty selling the image he does now as he ages and will need a Perfume Genius type of reinvention later on. He knows the audience that might carry him longterm are younger gay men, possibly coming out of their teens and entering the first phase of adulthood. This is why the songwriting is like this. This whole era is a literal twink romance and sex fantasy, that not even Troye himself might be living irl, since he’s approaching 30 and has had enough experiences to know better tbh It’s the polar opposite of the last Sufjan album, as an example, that approached a gay relationship (and its dismissal) from an older and more mature experience. Still it’s good pop music and I’m good we have multiple out gay male singers that younger people can relate to.

Cute numbers, pretty much what I expected

Love the album but as everyone else has mentioned it’s simply too slow. If only he added two more uptempo tracks or more tracks in general.

Bloom is one step above this but his discography is graded at :alexz:100%

Claiming some art is immature is absolutely fair. There are just some songs, production choices, or even the persona an artist takes on that is just not mature for their age and is extremely embarrassing. You want an obvious example? The Swish Swish video Katy Perry released. I like Katy Perry and I actually root for her to succeed, but that video came from a grown adult-- a video with the Nyan Cat meme and the Crying Jordan meme. Or the Hello Kitty video/song from Avril Lavigne. And again, I like Avril, but we can all agree that song and video were absolutely beneath her.

We, as the consumers, have every right to criticize someone's art.

Moreover, artists can continue to build on a theme they're known for as long as they execute that well or expand on the storytelling in a unique and interesting way. SOUR and GUTS do this excellently because, especially in GUTS, there's a self-awareness to Olivia's behavior. She's also tongue-in-cheek, which elevates this #sadgirls diary-entry-level writing.

Look, us users who didn't enjoy the album aren't bashing people who like it or Troye himself. Troye will be fine with or without my criticisms. He's released three albums, several EPs, and had a movie and TV role that I can recall. And if I'm not mistaken, he was pretty popular on Youtube before making the switch to music. And good for him. He worked hard to get to where he is. And I rather have a pop gay icon that the gays can enjoy as well as the GP (if Troye ever reaches GP-popularity). I just happened to not like one album from his. There are Troye's other songs/projects I can still listen to. I will live.

They seriously need to restock the US store with the pink vinyls. They're still available on every other country's store. Like... come on.
