It's a shame it took a white person to cover it.  This is one of the greatest songs of all time.

And this is what we TRY to explain to ppl, but they act like we just mention race just because.

This is NOT something to be proud of.

I thought the music nerds would’ve been more appalled at the tropical house cover that SMASHED and was inescapable all throughout 2016.

Never heard of this. Just like I would have never found out about the other cover without this thread. Wouldn't know about the DOMO cover either without ATRL to be fair :rip:

I thought it would be her as performer. Seems like Country has a long way to go :rip:

That song is immaculate. I discovered it via the Jonas Blue cover some years back.

SN: Pre-fame Sam Smith also covered this on YouTube.

Hmm I wouldn’t say it took this cover for the song to finally get appreciated. Doesn’t it have like 700 million streams on Spotify or something? That’s massive, although it should still have more, considering it’s one of the best songs ever made. I’m sure the cover is boosting the original heavily as well. But yeah obviously LC’s version doesn’t deserve to out-chart the OG (I think it’s a good enough cover though), but it is what it is and is probably due to the Hot 100 working so differently now.

This particularly is insane though, but sad that she’s the first to do it. Hopefully more will follow her.

Yeah, basically all of this. There's some weird revisionism going on in this thread that the original was some mostly unknown, niche hit before Luke Combs (or Jonas Blue a few years ago) finally catapulted the song into the spotlight :toofunny2: The original's always been a classic, which is exactly why it keeps getting covered. Its #6 peak isn't representative of the song's legacy and, like you said, could have more to do with how the Hot 100 worked in the 80s than anything else.

Either way, get those coins queen :clap3: :clap3:

As someone who listens to country, and has many friends and family who listen to country, everyone and their mom knows this is a cover.

It’s not nearly as magical as the OG. But it’s a solid cover, and I think Luke should be proud.

But yeah, let’s not act like the OG isn’t one of the most famous songs of all time. I’d easily say the OG is single handedly one of the top ten most important songs of the last 50 years.

I third this.

Billboard chart runs were such a damn mess in the 80s. RUTH only peaked at #30 back in 1985 for example so its 2022 run was MILES better. Fast Car actually made the 2011 year-end for the UK Singles Chart after someone covered it so this song has impactful for years and years before Luke covered it.

Imagine writing such a raw, vulnerable song like that not knowing it would change your life forever. Jeez

his version is crap

the fact he left the OG unchanged is very respectful.  You would think a country male would change the pronouns but he didn't.  That should be applauded.

Except she's not singing the version that topped the chart.

Respect has nothing to do with it. She doesn't allowed for the song to be altered. It had to covered as is, which is why she blocked Nicki and Gabrielle from sampling it.
