The Dutch king, Willem-Alexander, has apologised for the Netherlands’ historical involvement in slavery and the effects that it still has today.

The king was speaking in Amsterdam on the 160th anniversary of the legal abolition of slavery in the Netherlands, including in former colonies in the Caribbean.

It really is. Dutch people are masters at PR. Everybody thinks the Netherlands is this accepting place, meanwhile, xenophobia towards foreigners is perfectly normalised.

What do you guys expect to happen “cutting a check”

Like I’m genuinely curious as to what reparations people are referring to everytime this subject comes up. How does that mean anything sincere or fix the past?

Recognizing past wrongs is already a big step. There isn't a price for past wrongs so giving money to individuals doesn't make any sense. There are things that can be done - scholarships, community building, trade, etc.

You do realize that ''cutting a check'' is just a figure of speech for those kinds of things right? not literally opening the king's wallet and having him physically write a check for everyone that qualifies for one :deadbanana4:

Oh I thought you meant the same "cutting a check" that's being planned in California.

Amsterdam, the Hague and Rotterdam are different. People there would sometimes speak English by default rather than Dutch. Not to mention that expats tend to circle around their own international bubbles.
