Sweden Quran burning sparks anger across Muslim world

Salwan Momika, said to be an Iraqi living in Sweden, set fire to a copy of the Muslim text in front of Stockholm's central mosque on Wednesday.

The Quran burning on Wednesday took place as Muslims around the world celebrated the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.

Swedish police had given Mr Momika a permit for the protest, in accordance with free-speech laws. But later police said the incident was being investigated for incitement of hatred.

The protest sparked anger among other nations too.

Morocco and Jordan have recalled their ambassadors to Stockholm, and Morocco has also summoned Sweden's charge d'affaires in Rabat.

Iraq said the incident was "a reflection of a hateful aggressive spirit that has nothing to do with freedom of expression."

Iran echoed Iraq's criticism, calling the act of burning the Quran "provocative" and "unacceptable", while Egypt described it as a "shameful" act which was especially provocative as Muslims mark Eid al-Adha.

Saudi Arabia - the destination of around 1.8m worshippers on the annual Hajj pilgrimage this week - said "these hateful and repeated acts cannot be accepted with any justification."

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the Quran burning was "legal but not appropriate".

Plans to burn copies of the Quran have sparked riots in Sweden in recent months.

Police had rejected similar protest applications recently, but courts then ruled that they should be allowed on freedom of expression grounds.

I wonder if this man was a religious minority back in Iraq. Non-Muslims in that region get treated pretty terribly, so I wonder if that's why he feels strongly enough to do this. That said, if he goes through with it, then I fear for his life.

One individual burned a book. Calling back ambassadors because of it sounds extreme. But yeah, i dont think the book burning should've been allowed in the first place.

Not them allowing this burning to happen while trying to get into NATO :coffee2: Such a stupid thing to do and honestly they deserve whatever backlash they get. It’s clear islamophobia that is being allowed by the state.

Wow, it's even right there in bold :ace: I'm dumb.

Tbf to myself though, I think I had read an article before this had happened when the permit had been approved.

Regardless, good luck to this guy, because he's going to need it.

i think it’s hypocritical to allow Quran burnings in a liberal country but take legal action once someone burns a pride flag. Everyone should just respect each other and stop insulting each other for the sake of attention. This shouldnt be allowed in the first place. You can share criticism in a respectful way. Like burning a book that is memorized by 1/4th of the world would actually do something… smh

It's Sweden they can do what they want on their grounds. Just like how I don't protest about LGBTQ people mistreatment in Qatar :coffee2:

Tell that to those countries who find no issue burning pride flags and putting gays behind bars. But I guess those two aren't comparable because it's a matter of humanity vs religious teachings.

And even on a religious level, you could burn a bible or a torah on their territories and no one would bat an eye. Where's the outrage? :celestial5:

Because muslims are the most devoted religion in the world. thats why you see atheists and liberals mocking jesus and christians constantly but nobody even dares to do the same to Islamic prophets.

I am all for the burning of all religious texts, but doing it front of a Mosque is just asking for drama and attention. It is stupid and very clearly directed at the Muslim community in the area.

I want you to honestly look yourself in the mirror and ask, "Why would atheists and liberals who live under christian tyranny, be concerned and focus on muslim theocracy that affects them 0 times of the year?"

Muslims quite literally shoot eachother in the foot all year round. This fabricated "mUsLiM tAkEoVeR!1!1" you nuts have been claiming since 9/11 has yet to transpire, not even in countries where millions of muslim refugees were housed.

No one is buying an imam shouting in arabic because lil Nas x did a split, in a mosque, in Qatar requires a complete deflection from conservative christian nuts trying to outlaw trans people.

Islam will never be a threat to christian theocratic power, y'all made sure of that yourselves so bare the dragging that comes with it. Heavy is the head that believes the biggest fairytale.

I'm really really really sorry, I honestly do wish well for all muslim people, totally, wanted to specify that before saying the next thing:

Unless Islam goes the christianity/catholicism route and opens up and gets with the times, as in, for example, give women equal rights as men and stop the bigotry against the LGBTQ, it is absolutely not a religion but a hateful ideology.

I'm sorry but that hateful ideology is threatening to women, the LGBTQ and even muslim men, so huge props to that iraqi guy. Let's burn some more. :gaycat1:

Also, again, sorry but f*ck Islam, the livelihood and freedom of people is light years more important than your ancient bigotry book.

I guess burning a LGBTQ flag isn’t homophobic or an ideology :rip:
Some of y’all love playing dense.

That's why Christianity is mocked in the west, not for fun but because Christian elected officials routinely try to eliminate demos from the map.

It's done largely in opposition to christian attempts at fascism. Not because a christian said someone was going to hell or threatened eternal damnation.

Until Muslims get to be an elected block that affects people's rights, no one outside the rightwing(who hate all minorities) cares to make political messages against them because they're basically irrelevant(luckily.)

There’s something really dark about burning books that always upsets me even though I don’t agree with their words

I think you're heavily underestimating the huge threat that hateful ideology (Islam) is in the world.
