This is huge, I kinda stan! Diet soda is nasty anyway? Why not have the full taste if you drink unhealthy ****?

Well diet soda means it doesn’t have calories. And that’s actually perfect for people like me who are addicted to these kind of drinks but are trying to loose weight or just not get fat.
The cancer thing kinda ruins it now tho :deadbanana2:

Don't worry yet, my fellow Diet Coke girlies. Reading the article, this is not indicative of a sudden shift in the actual science; they're putting it in the same category as using mobile phones; and it's in a less risky category than eating red meat.

To those who hate the taste: fun fact, it's like coriander/cilantro! Not everyone tastes harsh chemical flavors when consuming artificial sweeteners. Some of us mostly just taste the sweetness.

Now who drinks DIET Coke. The regular one already have less fizz.

Wait yall still have Diet Coke?? Here it served OUT after Zero debuted at #1 in the 2000s which to this day stays the Main soda girl. I don't think anyone even remembers Diet, it sucked in comparison to Zero.

Anyway drink water

I've been avoiding aspartame for years. My dad suddenly developed an awful skin condition ~8 years ago, and after a year or two of going to many different doctors, one finally had him cut his daily can of Diet Coke at lunch (along with sugar-free gum, artificially sweetened protein bars etc) and his skin went back to normal in a matter of weeks. His doctor linked us to a bunch of studies about aspartame, and it's clear that many people have been sounding alarm bells for awhile now, even if they're being ignored :deadbanana:

Tbh after mostly cutting soda out of my life completely, now I often find it gross :deadbanana: It makes me feel sick if I drink more than half a bottle or something. The only time I ever think to have a soda now is if I want a whiskey + ginger ale or whiskey + Coke when I'm out with friends or something, maybe once a month at most.

WAIT! I just read Sparkling Ice doesn’t have aspartame in it! I ******* won :jonny5:

Diet Soda is not associated with weight loss anyway. People are just fooling themselves with it anyway

Posted

You might as well drink a regular soda if you drink diet anyway

I could never drink anything with artificial sweeteners as they taste awful to me, but I can't drink regular soda either as it's just so sweet. Why is there no 1/2 or 1/4 sugar options? I feel like that would make sense :dancehall:

Tbh, good. Instead of relying on artificial sweeteners to get around the unhealthy aspects of sugar, people need to be working on lowering their intake of sweet things in general.* Imo, it feels like a crutch that gives people a false sense of security.

I don't know the exact data so Idk if you're right, but if you are then I'm not surprised! The way I've seen it explained is that the taste (any taste) triggers the brain into expecting caloric intake, but when you consume something tasty without calories, your brain will want to compensate for that by making you crave more food.

*Mind you, I'm a complete hypocrite in this. I still drink regular soda fairly often, despite knowing that it's a complete disaster, even if you discount the high sugar amount. The phosphoric acid in it can block calcium absorption and lead to low bone density!

isn’t coffee also carcinogenic?

Not some of y'all making it seem like sugar is the healthier alternative. Sugar is just as bad, if not worse.

No one said it was for weight LOSS, but you don't gain weight from Diet Soda. I've lost weight and not gained anything since I made the switch years ago.

This will not deter my love for diet coke. Put it as my cause of death, i don't care at this point :rip:

Another example of people only reading the headline. The arm that is possibly suggesting this classification is the arm that says working too much can cause cancer.

Aspartame is one of, if not the most studied and researched chemical in the world. Every reputable study shows it is safe.

And even if it were a carcinogen, the amount you would have to be exposed to is not possible in the amounts we currently consume. Keep drinking your Diet Coke, you are 100% safe.

Not even remotely close to true. By all measurable standards, Diet soda is far less bad for you than regular soda. The only problem that is the same is the effect on your teeth; diet and regular soda have the same types of acidity which can contribute to tooth decay.
