Relampago. Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 I haven’t played it but lbr TOTK is taking it even if this game reinvented the wheel
Brunette Ambition Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 Definitely, at least to gamers. Many people will probably say tears of the kindergarten though: The switch is the McDonald’s of gaming and thus has broader appeal. But nothing this year comes close to the storytelling and gameplay of FFXVI. 1 9

50thStateofMind Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 no, it's definitely TOTK. To gamers AND critics. 2
Taste of Honey Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 (edited) I’m not done with it yet(hopefully not anywhere near either), but it’s largely shaping up to be the game I hoped it would be, especially after FFXV left a bad impression on me playing it last year. It’s an extremely strong step in the right direction for the franchise and deserving of the series’ legacy. I’m just scared at how they’re going to follow it up with 17 now, especially since you’re prone to get anything from Square Enix. Edited June 27, 2023 by Taste of Honey
CristianGarcia Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 It has potential. The soundtrack, story, combat and boss battles are A+ My only complaint is it could’ve been less linear and the side quests could’ve been more engaging.

You know they always go left field from the previous so it could be futuristic. It’s time for a female protagonist too

ATRL Moderator feelslikeadream Posted June 27, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted June 27, 2023 I can't wait to play it (once it's on sale or free) After the abomination that was XV, I know this is going to be so much better. I don't play a lot of games at launch, but my GOTY so far is TotK.
fauxtography Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 FF super fan and enthusiast since BIRTH and big fat no from me. don't drag me, but FF15 was somehow more enjoyable. While I do appreciate the things this game is doing right (mainly regarding story, also boss battles) the game itself has not really been fun for me to play at all. Combat lacks any purpose most of the time. Small enemies are just damage sponges and involve no strategy or variety. FF7 Remake action combat > FF16. Its not varied enough to be a real action RPG. RPG elements aren't there. abilities are disappointing, crafting is pointless, no finding treasure or anything hidden and fun. characters are pretty boring, this franchise really needs to go back to colorful casts performance issues up and down - unnecessary motion blur too damn dark, like, can't see **** half the time IDK where they go from here, but I REALLY need them to bring the whimsy back to the franchise.

I’m liking the game but I get this 100% ffx7 remake is lowkey how they should have the game (fighting wise) if they want to make it action somewhat but I like the story more than 15

MrFenty Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 It's enjoyable...probably my favorite since X but it's not GOTY for me. Combat doesn't require a lot of strategy and the side quests are dull beyond reason. However, the main characters are more engaging than some of the previous installments and the Eikon scenes are thrilling. The story captured my attention more than XIII or XV. But really it's the gameplay that brings it down for me. I haven't finished but 16 hours in already, I'm not sure my opinion will change much by the end
Starshine Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 (edited) Speaking of physics, FF16 is still serving one from 2010 that clearly hinders exploration. Exploration being running into invisible walls collecting the same glowing items in a linear to semi open world, very little reward. The player movement and motion blur are classic JRPG bad, it doesn’t feel refined or natural like the Western RPGs it tries to be. And for some reason, side quests have never evolved in this genre so you're stuck with fetch this, hand this over. Possibly due to the limitations with engine or lack of imagination with the budget set on cutscene sequences. The NPCs are also serving the Eras tour, absence of any color or diversity. Some of VA don’t even match the facial expressions or characters at all, the contrast from feeling “wow this is next gen” when seeing the epic Eikon boss battles/music to thinking this is something straight out of Fallout from 2009 when you attempt NPC dialogue. It’s almost a parody at times and a crime they let the Eng VA be the default, the hand movements sometimes doesn't even match up (it's like what Japanese people think how Westerners would act). The devs were prob forced to binge the first season of Game of Thrones and try imitate it or something cause... is this a mockery of its tropes, politics, language, etc.? Not saying the story is bad, I actually like it but even with it as its saving grace, nothing is revolutionary about the game that has already been done before or screams GOTY. The only thing that really tickled my toes were the cutscenes and fights in HDR, which was implemented really well and best played on an OLED. As for GAMEPLAY, emphasis on game and play... the combat is nothing spectacular, not challenging or requires any strategy, and gets repetitive at times. Overall it is a good game and I am enjoying it, but God of War Ragnorok, Breath of The Wild, Elden Ring, boundary pushing it is not. It's just a step up from the previous game which was panned with the GP, so it's bound to look godsend in comparison. It has a rightful score of... 88. Edited June 28, 2023 by Starshine 1
Fevesy Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 For me, yes. TOTK will win the actual awards though as it’s a critics darling and sets new benchmarks for open world games. However, I do have some critiques of FF16: - Gear feels pointless - I completely lose track on who is travelling with me since it changes so often - Sidequests are straight out of FF14 which makes sense since it’s the same team however they’re bad bad. - The budget seems to run out at the end - Hunts are very boring tbh and mob diversity isn’t great - Writing of Jill is… - Lack of diversity (however not to defend them since I’m not gonna give them that credit but it would’ve been a slippery slope with the rampant slave themes) I might be odd but I prefer linearity in games, as massive as ToTK is I’d probably turn it off because I would get overwhelmed with all the stuff to do which is a weird problem to have.

I agree, but the atmosphere and especially the boss fights more than make up for it.

Soundtrack, voice acting, writing all A+. And the complaints like being linear really don’t bother me since the world is beautiful and the story is engaging. It’s giving ff12 with the zones which rly isn’t a problem.
