REUTERS: One killed, seven injured in roller coaster crash in Sweden

One person was killed and seven injured, including children, in a roller coaster accident at the Grona Lund amusement park in the Swedish capital on Sunday, a park official and police said. Eyewitnesses said the park's Jetline roller coaster had partly derailed during a ride, sending people crashing to the ground.

"This is tragic and shocking, and regrettably we've learned that one person has died," Grona Lund spokesperson Annika Troselius told public broadcaster SVT. Police said there were children and adults among those injured but declined to comment on the extent of the injuries. Grona Lund said in a statement the 140-year-old park was closed until further notice. A spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

"My husband saw a roller coaster car with people in it falling to the ground," Lagerstedt said. The steel-tracked Jetline roller coaster reaches a speed of up to 90 kms per hour (56 mph) and a height of 30 metres (98 feet), transporting more than one million visitors each year, the amusement park says on its website.

Jetline was built in 1988, was later modified to become a more extreme ride by another manufacturer, and shares its support structure with several other roller coasters since this park is very tiny and all the rides are crammed together. It was bound to go wrong at some point.

Edit: another one of these old Schwartzkopf coasters derailed in Mexico in 2019 and I believe it was mostly blamed on poor maintenance back then, but maybe they've just reached the end of their shelf life.

I haven't been to a roller coaster ride in 12 years but I would still be willing to take the risk and ride one again

That’s like saying “imagine driving a car after all the crashes we see” or “imagine leaving your house after all the murders we see”

Imagine staying inside the house after all the structural collapses AND home fires we have seen.

Even staying inside isn't safe I fear...

Currently at Thorpe Park in England whilst reading this. RIP.

Rollercoasters when regularly maintained and  looked after are safer than driving. There’s a risk with everything, things like this just make you realise that life is precious and we should live every minute of it.

A best friend of mine works there and is in a state of shock after only starting a week ago. It's his first job too. Just... insane how things can quickly get out of control when everything itself seems fine. Hope the injured recover fully and the fatally injured RIP.

True, although setting that aside roller coaster accidents are not really that common tbh

They’re more common than they should be but the same could be said for most types of accidents.

That is really some bad luck to start working right before this, hope for the best for your friend!
