Grindr former exec says that app keeps user's nudes even after deleting accounts

LGBTQ+ dating app Grindr repeatedly violated state and global privacy laws by collecting and retaining highly sensitive data including nude photos without clear consent, the company’s former chief privacy officer alleged in a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Ron De Jesus says he was fired in retaliation for raising concerns about the company’s “alarming” data-privacy practices, according to a complaint filed Wednesday in a California state court in Los Angeles.

De Jesus’ accusations come after the company faced backlash for sharing users’ HIV status and was fined $7 million by the Norwegian Data Protection Agency for sharing user location and sexual orientation data with advertisers.

According to De Jesus, Grindr allegedly retained personal data including naked pictures and HIV status even after users deleted their accounts. That information was accessible by any employee or third-party vendor, he said.

But there’s tons of apps. Like scruff, sniffles, jackd, etc. Gay men were hooking up for hundreds of years before apps even existed.

in endless countries outside the US either these apps don’t exist or if they do exist have like two people on them. Grindr is the place to to.

Never posted nudes there, I only used Grindr for dating and relationship, not for hooking up

I am more worried over the fact they collect my face photos and location :biblio: that sounds extremely dangerous and could lead to witch haunt of gay men in the future

Scruff is literally one of the most popular apps. And other countries or regions have their own thing. I’m not even from the US so idk what you mean. Stop with the US defaultism.

It's one of the only instant app

Anyway this app is very weird. It also had this culture of racism where you could filter people by ethnicity.

What happened ?

First the app is owned by straight people. Who in the past said while they may not have issue with gay marriage. They think marriage should be between a man and a woman. The company has come under first repeatedly for its handling of user data, this thread is just another of the many controversies regarding data.

What makes this one very peculiar is keeping data like this is illegal in many countries. And Grindr has issues with minors sometimes using the app. Like a lot of underage kids are on Grindr. With Grindr retaining user data it can mean Grindr is hosting child porn.

The same reason people were having unprotected sex in bathhouses at the peak of aids epidemics

However alarming it is, your typical guy using Grindr doesn't care about that; they're just interested in whether or not they can find someone to hook-up with. The way guys send unsolicited nudes on there just say it all.

I think this just opens a class-action lawsuit because this feels like a violation of privacy and hence why being on these apps can be concerning. Sniffles isn't very private friendly and literally sets your proper location. :deadbanana2:
