In short, a severe solar storm could plunge the world into an "internet apocalypse" that keeps large swaths of society offline for weeks or months at a time, Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi, an assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine, wrote in the new research paper. (The paper has yet to appear in a peer-reviewed journal).

I've had enough teasing. PLEASE just give us something. We need an event that absolutely f*cks us all the way up and forces us to completely deviate from our normal routine. Not in a deadly Covid way of course, but something's gotta give. This world is itching for a radical change—our current state is unsustainable.

Maybe the wrath Gods tried it with Covid thinking it would change us for the better. They failed. We're worse than ever. Try again please!

I could have sworn we had already experienced one earlier this year, or last. It feels like they've been talking about this for quite some time.

Hmmm I kinda agree. Time to spice things up and force people to go outside and be more social. Post-COVID life is very different and it’s very notable especially if you work in a school setting.

There is always a possibility of a coronal mass ejection happening leading to another Carrington level event, a slim possibility though. The chances of it happening in the next 10 years is 1.88% or less. If it did happen we would at least have a slight warning time to prepare.

They been saying this for 20 years. You’d think they would be more prepared but that’s wishful thinking.

The good news is, local and regional internet connections are likely at low risk of being damaged because fiber-optic cables themselves aren't affected by geomagnetically induced currents, according to the paper.

They keep saying this every year and every year it doesn’t happen.
