Otter Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 12 minutes ago, State of Grace. said: Lmaaaao this plane analogy isn't really what you think it is. Maybe if this was a poorly made rocket ship full of ultra-rich space tourists. These people paid $250K each to sit criss-cross applesauce in a sub that is literally controlled by a $20 gaming console, bolted shut and can only be opened from the outside, with no GPS, no homing beacon, limited oxygen, etc. There were a lot of safety concerns around this DIY sub from the get-go. They should have at least made sure that there were proper safety measures and procedures in case of an emergency. Like....it's still a foolish decision and they are still stupid. As I said, I do feel extremely sad for the 19yo boy and their families, but it's hard for me to feel empathy for the rest who were grown ass adults and signed their lives away knowing the circumstances. Them paying that much is really irrelevant. The average Americans spends almost as much money on alcohol to punish their liver then the average Ghanian makes in a year. Income equality is gross obviously but cost is relative to the individual & their economic circumstances. People are out here spending 1000s on mobiles, videob games, brand names, whilst other people are starving. That $250k meaning probably very little to them is a consequence of our capitalist society, it's bigger than any individual billionaire or rich person. All of our celebrity favs probably spend ridiculous amounts on things we consider trivial like Beyonce apparently spending 20k on a wine... Fortunes aside, humans have always taken on expeditions and will go and will go and die on Everest for free. If not Everest it's Scuba diving, or rock climbing.... The desire is not in everyone but it's pretty wide spread in humanity to have novel experiences, it's not exclusive to the rich. They might be able to afford some of these before the average person (like flying earlier in the last century when it was exclusive to the rich) If your plane begins descending what are your "safety measures and procedures"? Do you think these safety concerns that you're literally only aware of because jounrnalists have brought to the forefront of your attention were brought to the passengers attention of the submersible? When was the last time you heard of a submarine or undersea tragedy? Using game controllers is supposedly the norm in most missions. ...ultimately no one can force you to feel empathy. You're fully entitled to feel as much or little as you wish. 3 1

KeshaSwift Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Honestly one of the most terrifying things I’ve heard in my life. Damn.

French ROV called Victor 6000 is now on its way however. I’m just surprised that UK, Russia, China and France have these ROV in their inventory meanwhile US does not.
Shelter Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 My mother is crying over it she is putting herself in the situation it is terrible, I don’t think there is any hope at all, they have no choice but to look for it and they will find it, but not before time runs out imo.
Jotham Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Very informative and straightforward video explaining what may have happened to the submersible 1
Komet Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 (edited) Is this true? Isn't this also literally one of the reasons so many people died on Titanic? You can't make this up Edited June 21, 2023 by Komet blu

This situation is catastrophic, Onion article worthy.

Trash Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Kind of an iconic way to die. Forever linked to an already legendary tragedy. Reminds me of the ending of Glass Onion

You're fully entitled to feel as much or little as you wish. Once again, this is not the same as boarding a plane. Commercial aviation is FAR more regulated and safer. Millions of people climb on airplanes and fly daily with little concern. More people have literally walked on the moon/been to space than to the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean/the Mariana Trench. Yes, we can die anywhere and at any given moment but these guys willingly jumped in an experimental deep-sea homemade sub. They weren't even competent scientists/oceanographers/researchers/sub-experts expanding their knowledge and who know what they're actually doing. Edited June 21, 2023 by State of Grace.

You can't make this up Meanwhile, I was just watching a video about a ship whose designer was so obsessed with safety and doing things right - literally keeping what happened to the Titanic in mind - that he bankrupted the company that built the ship. Everyone involved hated him... until the ship got crashed into by another, larger ship, a giant hole ripped into it, and it still managed to stay afloat. All thanks to the extra, extra safety measures the designer took. Here's the video, if anyone is interested: This channel also has a lot of interesting videos on the Titanic itself. Edit: In fact, this video (below) provides interesting insight into the design of the Titanic and how relatively small safety gaps left it open to its disaster, and provides back-context for some of the safety measures the designer of the Malolo insisted on. Nova_23 Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 (edited) I have empathy for those on board because I can’t imagine what it must be like to go out that way. I keep thinking about what their moments on the sub were like. What were they thinking when they realized they were lost? Did the owner try to calm their nerves down by telling them getting “lost” happens all the time and it’s not an issue? Did they attack him when they realized what was going on? Did the sub immediately implode and none of the above even occurred? Or are some of them currently alive and counting down their deaths? It’s just so awful to think about and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. My heart goes out to their families. But that’s where this all ends. What I don’t care for is all the attention and resources we are wasting on people who willfully took on this mission just because they could knowing full well that the sub was not approved or regulated under any standard. The comparisons to flying don’t make any sense because when we fly, we are getting on planes that have been checked for safety and regulated. We trust that the planes have passed their inspections and their parts won’t fail. Just like when we buy a car. This mission literally made you sign a waiver saying that you could die and mentioned death 3 times on its first page. When an airline makes us sign waivers mentioning death/dying to get on unregulated planes and we do so then you guys can use that argument. Edited June 21, 2023 by Nova_23 1

They only had 96 hours of air, none of them was going to starve Think about it logically from a fight or flight, life and death, standpoint. If there are fewer living people inside the vessel that means more oxygen, food, and water to keep yourself alive long enough to potentially be rescued. In that intense of a situation, all bets are off and it's every man for himself. None of them can be thinking rationally at this point. Edited June 21, 2023 by BeenTheShit
