Espresso Posted June 15, 2023 Share Posted June 15, 2023 A lot of polling and focus groups indicate this talking point actually gains traction with a lot of white moms that are independents because of the stereotype that the vast majority of the people needing this are kids of color, which actually isn't the case. It's just Reagan's "welfare queens" argument repackaged. What doesn't gain traction in polling which is also in that article, which Ron's running to Donald's right on AND which he's continued to hammer Ron for in advertising just this week is privatizing Social Security and Medicare. Now, whether Trump would actually follow through on that faux populism if hypothetically he was back in office instead of caving to the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation I sincerely doubt, but the point is, the distinction is still clearly there. That is an interesting point. Furthermore, a lot of the poor, white people who need programs like this happen to be staunchly Republican, so even being negatively affected like this is ultimately not going to change their minds and convince them to vote against Republicans. It is kind of a winning issue on the Republican side. However, it also adversely affects kids of color in this country and those families are traditionally Democrat. Which side will feel more emboldened to get out and vote because of an issue like this? Dems could push some really good messaging about this, but that would require Dems to be good at messaging.
