I re read that anthem because, originally when I was hoping to write a song for last rounds challenge, I was going to sample a line from each one of your season 1 songs :jonnycat:Β and they were so good to relive tbh whew, the hits :clap3:

one of my favorites despite it flopping. i was just at a city meeting for a bike lane this past week actually. i also got a new crosswalk installed in my neighborhood this year. my urbanism era :jonnycat:

For anyone who cares, here isΒ The Luck of The Draw (Better Mistakes Original Version) (Sample Free) (Bonus Track)

Β

Spoiler

(Verse 1)

When you talk about the shared timesΒ

I die and I feel aloneΒ

Questions keep on coming, I’m worriedΒ

It’s more than I knowΒ

Β

The hardest part is letting goΒ

And accepting that you’re his and not mine

He’s won this round, you’re sleeping roundΒ

The luck of it came by with timeΒ

Β

(Pre Chorus)

If I cast a line, would you grab on mine?

The stars misaligned but his realignedΒ

He taught you what you needed latelyΒ

When we’re talking lately, all that I can blame is…

Β

(Chorus)

Sometimes it’s the luck of the drawΒ

Some things you can’t stop or ignore

If you swim upstream, you’ll lose beliefΒ

You can’t change the course or stop Karma’s calls, β€˜causeΒ

Sometimes it’s the luck of the drawΒ

So when can I draw?

Β

(Verse 2)

When I think of how I’ve ****** upΒ

I could pack up, leave townΒ

Crying in the bathroom, while you two enjoy a film, then dinner nowΒ

Β

The hardest part’s forgetting now and accepting that you’re his and not mine

He’s won this round, I’m losing nowΒ

Your luck of it came by with timeΒ

Β

(Pre Chorus 2)

You taught him what he needed latelyΒ

Now when we’re talking lately, all that I can blame is…

Β

(Chorus)

Β

(Bridge)Β

When can I draw and get dealt you this time?

You call it love but I call it despiseΒ

Every new morning he’s there by your sideΒ

I wanna feel what he feels all the timeΒ

Β

(Chorus)

Β

(Outro)Β

The luck of the drawΒ

The luck of the drawΒ

To be fair it’s 7.9 was not bad at all, and that first round was massive with 32 entries so who knows how it would’ve done with a smaller pool and more focus. It was definitely a curve ball especially as your first entry in the first season, but I always found it refreshing and unique :clap3:

also, king of social change we love to see it, ready for Bike Lane part 2 when the lane is securedΒ :jonnycat:

It's okayΒ :heart2:Β I had another post yesterday in continuation to Legend E's dislike of Michelle's music. I was driving yesterday with my dad and halfway through "All You Wanted", he skipped itΒ :rip:

I had a verse originally where I made it more clear that I grew up without a dad and how when he came back it was too late. Should have kept itΒ :oxygen2:

Round 2: Samples & Sequels

Β

@Better MistakesΒ - The Luck of the Draw

Oh wow. Some of these lyrics are hitting really hard for me! The sentiment in this string is very strong and you’ve conveyed it really well. Lines such as β€œthe hardest part is letting go, and accepting that you’re his and not mine” and β€œyou call it love but I call it despise, every new morning he’s there by your side, I wanna feel what he feels all the time” absolutely tug at the heartstrings and feel nostalgic and relatable in a really natural way; I’m sure we’ve nearly all been in situations like this that we can emphasise with. I actually like the version you posted without the sampled lyrics even more lol. What I enjoy about this is that it feels very confessional and straight to the point, it doesn’t rely on flowery language or imagery and instead focuses on delivering its sentiment, which is very fitting for a song like this and helps it feel more cutting and raw. Very nice!Β

Β

@OreGuy - Call Me, Robyn

I like the shift of perspective that this sequel offers. Oddly, a lot of songs are kinda written from really hurtful perspectives like infidelity, so I like that you chose to turn this around and show how the girlfriend from the original song would have felt in response to what happened. Something that I also really appreciated about this and found to be very mature was that rather than being more hurt about the boyfriend, the person is more upset about the loss of the friend that they had. I really liked that addition and thought it added a more unique angle to this song as opposed to a more typical song about being mad at the cheater. Good job!

Β

@worldwide angel - echo

I have to say, I’m personally living for this empowerment era you are serving. As someone who struggles with anxiety too, this song is very refreshing to me. It feels so bright and warm, and I love music like this that serves to be uplifting, bring out the bliss and calm the mind if even only for a moment. This song served all that purpose for me, and it was really a joy to read! I also felt I could very clearly picture the song too, and the song you sampled was pretty chill which I could see it in, but I also could hear it being a very beautiful and serene upbeat song like a lot of Jessie Ware’s recent sound. I have to say I loved the length to this too, sometimes you writer can be on the shorter side (not necessarily a bad thing) but I enjoyed how developed this felt, with many dynamic sections to it. I found this full of life and wonderful, thank you! Another honorary 10 from me.Β

Β

@Kylie Jenner - Cameo

You are really coming with the bops this season, living for your singer-songwriter era! I think this works really well as a sequel to Lost in the Rays, and I like the reflections that Cameo offers in the aftermath of Lost in the Rays. It’s the more somber side of the end of the summer fling, and where Lost in the Rays could kinda be the end of summer song, Cameo feels like it’s coming from the autumn’s perspective or something like that. Your writing is slick and incredibly catchy again, I feel like you’ve found a really great position with these two songs where you do a great job of combining all the components of a catchy song, that still has emotional value, and memorable lyrics to it. Another great job, very excited for you this season!

Β

@Hug - DON’T-SAY-IT/DON’T-THINK-IT

I’m happy to say both elements of this work well in my opinion! I think the sequel component works very naturally, since the original song deals with the idea of what might happen when the relationship meets its end (due to loss), and with the sequel showing what actually happens when that does eventually come. And I also enjoy the sample component, though it’s more of a rogue choice I think it’s very fitting for the concept and I agree with your understanding of it; I think it shows really well the denial and attempts at ignorance that one might go through when they are faced with the loss of their love, so even though it seems kinda random at first glance I think it’s actually perfectly fitting and a very creative choice (I also enjoy the slight sample / call back in the β€œperfection is ephemeral like a setting sun” line). These components all come together well for me and create this overall polished feeling song. Even though you said you struggled more with this challenge, I think you’ve ended up with a really solid song.Β

Β

@Julianna Calm Down - Glitter (The City)

Though I enjoyed your first submission, I’m happy to say I think this song is even stronger! I might repeat myself slightly from what I said already, but I think this is a fantastic sequel to Fast Car. You do a wonderful job of taking the same emotion and story beats from the original, and progressing them and showing what could potentially have followed. It works really, really well and also feels very natural. I think the additions made during the bridge do a really good job of feeling like a crescendo and emotional peak to the song, and I love these changes from the version that I read prior. The song was great regardless, but this just pushes it even further and helps heighten the emotions even more. Another really great entry and definitely feels like an improvement over an already strong first round, so great job!

Β

@XO_LifeΒ - The child is grown, the dream is gone

Oh wow you are really in your dark era :jonny: here I was expecting summer bops and you are serving the opposite, interesting. I am enjoying seeing this other side of your writing, and I am definitely seeing the growth. It is great to witness! This is another great song and I really love the personal touches that the lyrics have, it really helps the song stand out more and feel memorable. I particularly liked lines like β€œmirror mirror on the wall you are a liar, skin is looking drier and drier” and β€œ22, no idea how many drugs I am on”.Β

Β

@xBoySelenatorx - What Do I Do?

I love that you picked to sample lyrics from a song by (who I am assuming is) your favourite singer, it must have been fun to write and that it at least what we were hoping for when coming up with the challenges this season! I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can definitely hear this song in her voice when reading through it, and it’s fun to picture. I think this song is really well written, and I really like the β€œwhat do I do” motif of the chorus, it works really well and I think it’s honestly pretty catchy. I can totally hear this being an infectious hook. Overall, while this is a more traditional pop song as opposed to your first entry, I find it to still be very well written and a great portrayal of a different style of writing that you possess. I am intrigued, again, to see what type of song you will write next round! Great job again.Β

Β

@PoKiTaurus - Ifrit & The PhoenixΒ

Oh wow. WOW. I found this to be a very powerful and emotional read. It’s like looking at somebody’s diary or stream of consciousness, it’s raw and incredibly effecting. But I love writing like that, I think it’s so special, and I find it brilliantly impactful. I’m also a big fan of songs that are written in this vein and don’t rely on a chorus or anything like that, but just tell their story verse by verse; it’s bold, and poignant. This song is a wonderful example of all of these qualities I’ve mentioned. It’s personal and powerful and only you could have written it; it’s a look into your world, your mind and your experiences, and I’m very thankful that you let us have a peek into it all with this song. I believe it will be one that stands out in my memory of this season, and even of this game as a whole. I’m also happy to say it’s my favourite I’ve read so far this season. Amazing, well done!
