ZIVERT Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 (edited) Congratulations to Edgars Rinkēvičs, who was elected President in Latvia today. A long-serving foreign minister in the Latvian government, Rinkēvičs is a strong supporter of the EU and NATO, as well as a solid ally to Ukraine as it defends itself from the Russian invasion. In 2014, he announced that he is "proudly gay," but keeps his personal life private. While other nations have had openly gay Prime Ministers and politicians serving in government, Latvia is the first nation to have an openly gay person serving in the role of President. Although the presidency is a largely symbolic role in Latvia, Rinkēvičs' election is still a big achievement for the LGBT+ community, especially if one considers that within this generation, Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union and part of the Eastern Bloc. Since its independence in 1991, Latvia has been making great strides in abandoning its Soviet past and joining the Western world. Congratulations to Edgars Rinkēvičs and to Latvia!
