Japan?! They’re definitely not more tolerant or accepting of LGBTQ+ than Thailand and The Philippines  :toofunny3:

India is slowly getting there. We currently are fighting for equal marriage in the supreme court and the chief justice seems sympathetic to the case (he also overturned the colonial era remnant of a law which criminalised homosexuality in India)

MTE. I’d say they’re more on par with China in that respect. They’re extremely conservative in Japan.

Maybe the map is in reference to LGTBQ+ safety and legal protections (not including marriage)?  This could include basic things like frequency of attacks against queer people and policies against hate crimes.  I'm just guessing.

Taiwan is HBIC when it comes to LGBT rights. I believe its still the only country in Asia where gay marriage is legal and LGBT couples just got equal adoption rights :clap3:Their digital minister who played a massive part saving the country from Covid when every other country was struggling or in lockdown is also trans/non-binary.

There's no way Japan is dark green when the Philippines and Thailand care more about LGBT people than them. :bibliahh:

Isn’t Thailand known for their ladyboys? They seem to enjoy some freedom there considering Asia is very traditional.

Africa is TOO religious and conservative due to (Islam, Pentecostal, jehovah witnesses) so the change will be very slow there.

in big cities in Latin America (Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, etc) are also very traditional because of Catholicism but in the last decade many of those countries have allowed gay marriages and even adoption so progress will come.

Philippines should be red not light green. A bill that merely seeks to prohibit LGBT discrimination is already so controversial there and was recently struck down by lawmakers, never mind same-sex marriage. It is one of the most homophobic countries in the world.

It's sad because many of the countries are previous colonies and may argue that acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people is a western ideal forced upon them when actually they are fighting tooth and nail to retain colonial law that subjugated and enslaved them. & that's pathetic.

People can blame imperialism and colonialism all they want but people are choosing to be backwards. They believe it is their holy right to be a bigot.

Japan being green is def questionable

I think Japan being green is justified and this map is more representative of LGBTQ+ safety rather than cultural and political equality.

I saw a tiktok recently of an openly queer japanese guy who basically said that due to the extreme polite culture in Japan it is highly unlikely to get hate crimed even tho it is still not accepted socially. Something I found funny that he said was that if a foreigner comes out as gay in Japan it‘s generally more accepted bc they see being queer as a "western thing" :deadbanana2:
