Armani? Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 Spoiler @Bey_Rihstan The Boy Is Mine sold 2M+ pure before the digital/streaming era https://web.archive.org/web/20110512023856/http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/74361/chart-watch-extra-20-years-of-top-songs/
pride4jc1222 Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 lol, this proves that this song wasn't really that big, and that its Billboard #1 run was aided by airplay-only songs not charting. Iris was just as big as TBIM that summer, and in fact Iris is higher certified (at 7x platinum): https://www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/?tab_active=default-award&ar=Goo+Goo+Dolls&ti=Iris&format=Single&type=#search_section If TBIM was really that big, it would be Diamond by now. Despacito, for comparison, is 13x platinum. 1

The song did 2.5M pure physical in the 90s and the majority of the other 1.9M are streaming units The song just isn't as hugely remembered relative to its peak

I hate when they say that TBIM was the biggest song of 1998 because Iris was just as big as it. People tend to forget about that because Iris didn't have a physical single, and wasn't allowed to chart at its peak. Even then, when airplay only songs became eligible to chart months (and that was after Iris's peak), it still charted at #9, while TBIM was already off the chart. I wonder how much closer to Diamond Iris would be if it had a physical single like TBIM. 1
Hector Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 That poster & his conspiracy theories again Those are great figures for a song from 1998 and Never Say Never eligible for 5x Platinum is amazing too 1

I think the song is okay, but I can't stand the stans that act as if it's the biggest song of all time. The Spotify numbers tell a whole different story. Spotify Streams: Iris: 1.23B The Boy is Mine: 180M

blown away Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 Not only was this song huge, it was also global. One of the rare instances where talent wins.
