lol, this proves that this song wasn't really that big, and that its Billboard #1 run was aided by airplay-only songs not charting. Iris was just as big as TBIM that summer, and in fact Iris is higher certified (at 7x platinum): https://www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/?tab_active=default-award&ar=Goo+Goo+Dolls&ti=Iris&format=Single&type=#search_section

If TBIM was really that big, it would be Diamond by now. Despacito, for comparison, is 13x platinum.

It was still the best selling song of 1998 in the US. Despacito came out in the streaming era so it's not a very good comparison.

You're comparing a physical sales era song to a streaming era song?:rip:

The song did 2.5M pure physical in the 90s and the majority of the other 1.9M are streaming units

The song just isn't as hugely remembered relative to its peak

We will keep streaming it like in this moment. :bunny2:

Even if you take away the comparison with Despacito, TBIM is still well behind Iris (a song that came out around the same time as it) in certification. I hate when they say that TBIM was the biggest song of 1998 because Iris was just as big as it. People tend to forget about that because Iris didn't have a physical single, and wasn't allowed to chart at its peak. Even then, when airplay only songs became eligible to chart months (and that was after Iris's peak), it still charted at #9, while TBIM was already off the chart. I wonder how much closer to Diamond Iris would be if it had a physical single like TBIM.

It's not Brandy and Monica's fault that Goo Goo Dolls didn't release the physical single of the song :michael:

The way the stans talk about the song, you think it would be way bigger. I think the song is okay, but I can't stand the stans that act as if it's the biggest song of all time. The Spotify numbers tell a whole different story.

Spotify Streams:

Iris: 1.23B

The Boy is Mine: 180M

Maybe it’s just because it’s a way better song

Not only was this song huge, it was also global. One of the rare instances where talent wins.

Deserves diamond.
