Perfect release date. If this is really good it will be pretty big domestically. This property is a multigenerational cultural touchstone for black people in the US.

Really want this to be good.

What was wrong with the first film?

There isn't a first film. This is the first film of the stage musical, of which this is adapting.

1985's TCP was such a heartfelt classic and one of the best movies ever made. I'm not sure how I feel about a remake even though I fully understand how it can cater to a new audience... But in all honesty, that trailer actually looks promising.

I'm quoting this from youtube:

this is NOT a remake of the original movie, it is an adaptation of the broadway musical. The musical is much more closer to the book than the original movie. The musical and the 1985 film are vastly different so there is nothing to worry about. this movie will be its own thing.

This looks really good, but

Spoiler

the trailer made kinda obvious that Halle's character dies. I haven't watched the original movie, so I don't know if this is common knowledge or it's supposed to be a shock.

I’m SO excited for this. The original film is obviously a classic but it cuts out Nettie’s life in Africa entirely. I’m glad we’re going to see more of her story, and what a role for Halle to really prove herself as an actress! The whole cast is STACKED

Every new version of a book is not a remake but a new adaptation. You can make a remake of pulp fiction, if you make pride and prejudice no one is calling a remake of any of the 150 versions before.

Anyway is the same story and subject so you can compare them anyways like you can have a discussion about the best pride and prejudice adaptation ever made.
