NORC: Certainty that God exists falls to less than 50% in the U.S.

Only half of Americans now say they are sure God exists. That finding, from the closely watched General Social Survey, stands out among several nuggets of new data about religion in America. Not quite 50 percent of Americans say they have no doubt about the existence of God, according to the 2022 survey, released Wednesday by NORC, the University of Chicago research organization.

As recently as 2008, the share of sure-believers topped 60 percent. Thirty-four percent of Americans never go to church, NORC found, the highest figure recorded in five decades of surveys. Religious scholars consider NORC the gold standard of surveys on faith. The General Social Survey found 29 percent of Americans claiming no religion in 2021, up from 23 percent in 2018 and 5 percent in 1972. X

Way too high. Drive those numbers down!

I don't like surveys like these. "God" is too abstract of a concept for this to amount to anything -- A lot of agnostics, myself included, reject the notion of a tangible "God" but believe there is a mystic energy or universal force of some sort that we'll never understand in our lifetime.

I'd be much more interested to see what respondents describe as "God" and what their beliefs (or lack there of) may be in the absence of religion.

I always forget what an insanely religious country the US is

I would have expected that to be much higher.

It is almost as if people are being turned away by the idea of a God when that God's followers are constantly attacking people in the name of God.

Christians and Conservatives in general are going to have a hard time in a couple of decades. The young generation will bring this country back to secular control.

Too high if we're being honest. GOP accelerated this decline.

People's idea of churches in the US often falls under guns, money and tax exemptions.
