"Baby Love" hits 200M: The Supremes | 4 songs w/ 100 million Spotify streams

"Where Did Our Love Go" was their first number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. It had sold 2 million US copies within a year and is certified Silver in the UK for digital sales tracked from 2004-2021.

It's notable for being the first of 5 consecutive US number-ones the group scored between 1964-1965; "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Back in My Arms Again". By mid-1967 they would have 10 US number-ones and by 1970 they would reach their total of 12 US #1s.

They had released multiple singles since signing to Motown in 1960 which either failed to or barely charted. It wasn't until their single "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" in 1963, that they had their first major hit, when it reached #23 on the Hot 100 and #24 in Australia.

A legendary song. Their catalogue deserves more streams than this tbh.

I logged in today on ATRL to make this thread.

OT: Their first #1 song. Unfortunately their songs are a little bit short (which is normal for 60s standards) but I tend to listen to the extended versions.:jonny5:

The alternate versions and takes over the years are great, plus all the different live versions.

I gagged when I found the extended take of Ain't That Good News with Flo on lead.

This version with the vocals at the end :smitten:

Plus the 70s too

Yes they really don't get the flowers they deseve, esp. 70s hits.

Despite this, they still outstream much later girl groups, even though older listeners aren't as active on Spotify.

Unfortunately all the videos are unavailable for me. Florence's voice was GODLY though and so was Mary's. Such a shame that BG mismanaged them and only cared for Diana (which had the best commercial voice but still).:katie:

Not sure if these Spotify links work instead. And yes it's a shame Berry didn't do something similar to what Mathew did with DC and market them in different genres. Diana for Pop, Florence for R&B/Soul and Mary for Jazz and AC. But then we wouldn't have gotten the incredible 70s catalogue.

I saw a few weeks ago that it was gonna make it there soon.

Congrats for another 100M song. It's crazy that they have more streams than many other girl groups that came after them.

I wished it was their later, and more interesting songs that got better streams (from "I Hear A Symphony" - onwards).

Ugh Motown needs to audit their catalog. I just know they have many multiplatinum singles and albums.

Come see about me, Love child, Where did I love go are the trinity of singles for me.

The motown classics need to get that audit so RIAA can certify them. I get Motown did some foolery but it's like 6 decades later now. No one will care...the songs became classics even if they bought some of them in the early stages.

RIAA needs get er done.

Yes it's a shame the GP loves their most basic hits the most. Songs like the funky Love is Like an Itching in My Heart and No Matter What Sign You Are, the majestic Love is Here and Now You're Gone and I Hear a Symphony, the soulful Back in My Arms Again and the haunting My World is Empty Without You don't get the due they deserve.

I'm glad to see Stoned Love (Jean-era) is consistently one of their top tracks though. The 70s Supremes took the sound and legacy to a whole new level.

I need a Scherrie-era song to go viral. He's My Man would slay Tik Tok.

Yes!!! It's long overdue esp. with streams. Even if they just used soundscan era onwards they would have so many certifications! :deadbanana2: Just look at all the UK digital certifications since the 2000s; 1 platinum, 1 gold and 2 silver digital singles.

They have 20 published million-selling US singles...and only 2 are certified Platinum by the RIAA :biblio:

Only 2 of their non-compilation albums are certified :biblio:

They're clearly the best-sellling girl group of all time but the lack of audited sales figures means no one can officially publish that. 100 million total has been estimated and seems reasonable.

TASTE. It completely got overshadowed by You Can't Hurry Love but it deserves just as much adulation.

It's also one of those singles where the mono single mix is better than the stereo album mix
