tili33 Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 I can think of Iggy Azalea who changed her chin and nose at the peak of her popularity, sure there were other things at play but maybe the people became used to her looking like before and they needed to be reintroduced to the new Iggy. Maybe Adele too, sure, she also started changing her image into a more elitist way with the star-studded live special at the peak of the gp being sick of rich people. the pixelated to be loved self-recorded living room performance didn't do much, and lets not even start with her residency.
Arrows Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 Hm, maybe you’re on to something. There’s definitely more examples of it going wrong than it going right.
Beyonceist Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 I'm sorry but this was nothing but ICONIC BEHAVIOR
Helios Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 Absolutely NOT. Look at Melanie Martinez, she did better. Artists like christina Aguilera completely changed their looks and style and still sold millions.
Ras Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 (edited) If done right it can create interest in the new era, if done wrong like in Katy's example (it was a really unflattering cut) it can harm its success. Pop music is heavily based in image and Witness was a further proof of that. Edited May 20, 2023 by Ras
Punky Rooster Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 Not for the true legends like Madonna, Rihanna and Janet. Lessers probably.
cockatoo Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 I kinda feel like it only works when you're established. People who change their image after their debut when barely anyone knows them yet are destined to flop yeah. If you've already released a couple of albums then it can be a cute way to keep things interesting ala good girl gone bad
idontdodrags Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 It depends, Taylor had her body done but in a subtle and classy way, so the GP embraced it.
Abracadabra Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 In some cases, It worked out fine for MJ which is probably the most notable and extreme example of a famous artist changing physically
loveisdead9582 Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Not necessarily. It’s when the looks change and so does the music.
MotoPapi Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Madonna & Rihanna mastered the art of reinvention. For Katy, Adele and others it backfired tho
DamianSolo Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Not at all. If anything, it has the potential to make an artist more appealing and even marketable.
elevate Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 No. Madonna has changed her appearance and vibe so many times I wouldn't know where to start. Christina went from a raucous Stripped to a very classic, Monroe vibe with Back To Basics and had a successful album and tour with that. Janet has alternated between sultry, sensual, to full on militaristic and still achieved great success. It's not just about the talent, it's about the vision. The artist needs to have a very specific reason for wanting to change their style and has to follow through with it.
vale9001 Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 (edited) Depends in the music and the character. I agree in some way Adele looking too much sophisticated now, and this navigate diva (and i would say also a bitchy diva a little bit snob) could have impact her career, since her brand was basically being the Next Door british girl. She exploded in the peak era of talent shows, when the "wow this housewife looking like me can really sing and became a star" was strong. For other names changing is their brand. Johnny Jacobs Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Rihanna is the living proof that its not.. no other artist changed their appearances more than her.. on the other hand.. taylor in 20 years changed her nails color at best yet she's mega successful
