H5N1 Updates - Now in 23 mammal species

Recommended Posts

As of now, there are no cases of human-to-human transmission. Also, a friendly reminder that H5N1 has been around for decades.

This thread is used to mainly post updates, since there has been greater coverage in 2023 in mainstream media.

Unless you work in a farm or work in the agricultural department/ministry, there's not much for the GP to do except to avoid sick/dead animals.

I guess there isn't that much to discuss so I will just post updates when I am free.

Some tests should be run so this can stop!

In all seriousness, the fear mongering by the usual media outlets had me a little bit worried ngl :rip: Hopefully they manage to get this under control, agriculture workers must be very scared atm.

thanks for the update @Genius1111

It was found near Utqiagvik, one of the northernmost communities in Alaska, two years after this latest strain was detected in North America. Gerlach said it was likely the bear was scavenging on the carcasses of infected birds.

Polar bears are listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of endangered species, mainly due to the loss of sea ice.

It is possible that more bears have died unnoticed as they tend to live in remote places with few people, said Gerlach. “You’re really dependent on the public that’s out there, or the wildlife biologists that are doing surveillance,” he said.

The current outbreak of the highly infectious variant of H5N1 – which started in 2021 – is estimated to have killed millions of wild birds. Globally, thousands of mammals have also died of the virus, including black bears and brown bears. Bald eagles, foxes and kittiwakes are among the species to have died of the virus in Alaska in recent months.

“It’s been in Antarctica and now it’s in the high Arctic in mammals – it’s horrifying,” Diana Bell, emeritus professor of conservation biology at the University of East Anglia, told the Guardian.

H5N1 strain of bird flu found in raw milk from infected animals: WHO

Cows and goats joined the list last month - a surprising development for experts because they were not thought to be susceptible to this type of influenza.

US authorities earlier this month said a person working on a dairy farm in Texas was recovering from bird flu after being exposed to cattle.

"The case in Texas is the first case of a human infected by avian influenza by a cow," said Wenqing Zhang, head of the global influenza programme at the World Health Organization.

"Bird-to-cow, cow-to-cow and cow-to-bird transmission have also been registered during these current outbreaks, which suggest that the virus may have found other routes of transition than we previously understood," she told a media briefing in Geneva.

...

"For this particular H5N1 virus detected in dairy cows, there are a couple of candidate vaccine viruses available."

In the case of a pandemic, there are close to 20 influenza vaccines licensed for pandemic use and they could be tailored with the specific virus strain in circulation, she said.
