Róisín Murphy - 'Hit Parade'

Okay lets do it; review time

I absolutely love the way the album opens dark and mysterious with "What Not To Do." Dark trap Roisin was not on my bingo card haha, but this sets the tone for the fun and uniqueness that's about to come.

"CooCool" is the most 70's funk disco inspired tune and it will always have a place in my heart, such a vibe, so cool, pun intended.

"The Universe" is immaculate Roisin in her element being weird and funny at the same time, an absolute fav since its earlier release.

"Hurtz So Bad" really is a groover and may take  extra listen but it really hits the soul and gets you moving in melancholy. I guess that's why she spelt it 'hurtz' (electrifying) and not 'hurts.'

"The House" pairs well with "CooCool" in its funkiness and quirky guitar strings, id love to be floating 'in a heart shaped swimming pool' to this record.

"Spacetime" (interlude) is really playing up the whole weird fun house experience we find ourselves in which fades right into "Fader" which is a song I did not like on first listen, but eventually grew to be one of my most favorite, especially with its sample use, and hooky chorus.

What does it mean to have a... "Free Will" sings Roisin. Some may find this ironic based on her recent views but I find it even more meaningful in this moment. Easily one of the most gorgeous songs on this LP.

"You Knew" is the most entrancing record on this album, stunning, unique and dramatic. "What you expect me to toe the line for?" she sings. I pause to think of what she means by this? DJ Koze's production definitely reels me in to the deep; the ocean. I am taking it quite literally. A MASTERPIECE.

How can the next track top this. Well, leave it up to Murphy's artistic excellence to serv up "Can't Replicate." DJ Koze keeps the bass moving on this one, giving us 12" maxi single realness with two back to back 7 minute records. A node to the 90s electronic music days. Roisin sings this one in a slow sexy way, reeling us into her rabbit hole. Overall this record is very instrumental driven, almost like a dub mix.

"Crazy Ants Reprise" is a play off the 3rd song on the album. Its giving valley girl. Shes too funny. (Interlude) Should this have not started before 'The Universe' ?

"Two Ways" makes us realize we are shoulder deep into Murphy's fun house. An almost trap style record with formanted vocals really takes us on another trip.

"Eureka" starts off slow, as if to allow us to take a breath from the rollercoaster journey we've been on as a listener. Small chimes and blissful vocal excellence keeps us entranced, great album closer.

It's actually GORGEOUS! The purple/black/sometimes-white swirls on the vinyl fit the cover perfectly. It's also actually deluxe. It's MUCH thicker than the standard gatefold. Has a stunning booklet (not sure if the others have the booklet as well tbh) and the title and tracklist are done with a metallic foil effect. Also the inner sleeves are shiny silver mirror-y lol.

It's definitely worth the 5 bucks more. Plus the obvious bonus track. Others selling 1LP in a newspaper for 40 bucks should be ashamed tbh.

Send one my way :gaycat7:will send nudes :loki:

The album is great but I couldn't really bring myself to stream it legally. It's a shame how things have turned out, but I figured I'd at least close out the era properly by listening to the full thing.

I do think I still prefer Roisin Machine, but this is such a different vibe.  I don't know what will happen from here on out for her, but this is a good release to leave her on for me.

Well they also didn’t review GUTS, Mid Air and I’m sure a bunch of other big releases this week. They still may review it.

Fader - Free Will - Who Knew is the most exquisite 1-2-3 punch I've heard in a long time, it's insane.

Maybe that's why I'm not hearing what everyone hears in Can't Replicate, it feels so monotonous and sterile to me after that colorful streak :chick3:

yeah but they left the album off of their “10 Albums Out This Week You Should Listen to Now” list after giving two of the songs a BNT and doing a whole profile on her back in june 💀

Can't Replicate is much more of a classic DJ Koze song than anything on the album

Spoiler

even though this entire records reads as DJ Koze - Hit Parade (featuring Roisin Murphy) to me. its a much bigger showcase for him than for her

So  Dj Koze is like a proper established act? I might have to listen to them because Can't Replicate is my fav from the album

yes, in certain circles. he's pretty much a legend in the techno scene, especially in Germany where he is from. Amygdala and especially Knock Knock received critical acclaim and he has several ICONIC remixes and stand alone tracks like XTC. he also has two songs with Roisin on Knock Knock.

Well, I saw that, maybe they are just trying to minimize press for it but will score it fairly…or not at all, which would just be tacky imo.

I think it's likely that they had their review ready but are going rewrite it to reflect the situation, IF they're going ahead and reviewing it.

I’m fine with the review touching on it like everyone else’s seems to be. Just hope the score is fair. It’s an incredible record and deserves to be given a score that reflects that. Anything less than an 8 is just being ridiculous. But yeah tear her apart in the written review!

I don't know what's worse - you making these vile, misogynistic and unwarranted comments or the people liking them. A woman doesn't deserve death for the simple crime of having a different opinion. You're the problem, not her.

Yes I'm the problem! Because the 3 people liking my post on ATRL compares to her platform sharing transphobic comments
