Keter Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 I hadn’t even heard about it. He needs to step back and get his personal life together because he always seems miserable.
Mr. Mendes Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 (edited) I think this is missing some incredibly important context. It's a low budget film, it's primary production company is an independent studio and this is only their second film, their additional production companies have help make a handful of successful blockbusters (they were not the lead production company on any of them) but are dominated by several films of a similar calibre, it was distributed domestically by an independent studio, distributed internationally by another independent studio, not given an ounce of promotion beyond a trailer that was not even placed in front of most blockbusters that released prior to it's date, and was not even given much space to make any nose during it's first showing at SXSW. Now, that's not to say that the film is worth anyone's time because from what I've been told, it's painfully average. But I'm not going to rush to call Ben a flop when this is hardly something that was going to succeed no matter who was in it. Had this been a massive blockbuster tent pole performing poorly, then maybe, but I'm not gonna be shocked when an indie film flops because 9 times out of 10 that's what they do. So what' the point of this defense?. You need to make money. Also 2.118 screens it's not like it's this independent obscure movie. It's robert rodriguez + ben affleck.
zasderfght Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 I haven't been interested in any film Robert Rodriguez has directed since Alita: Battle Angel. That film and Sin City: A Dame to Kill for were pretty mid. Not to mention, Ben Affleck has not had a recent project that caught the GP's attention. I was like the 1 person who saw The Way Back, and Ben Affleck did a great job, but he was also in those awful Zack Snyder movies like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. I just think Rodriguez and Affleck are the type of people that not only need favorable reviews to critical acclaim, but they need to be attached to a project that the GP is interested in. They're not people who can churn out projects that just anyone will line up for.
SleepNoMore Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 (edited) This movie was indeed a bomb. However his movie “Air” was made as an Amazon Prime exclusive and they decided to do a limited “exclusive” theatrical window for promotion, which was unprecedented for Amazon, and it made $85million before Amazon also released it on Prime. That was a good result for them so the film is considered a success and it’s the one he would care more about since he also directed it. His career is fine. source (relevant part at the end): https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/guardians-galaxy-box-office-book-club-1235487301/amp/ Edited May 15, 2023 by SleepNoMore

What about it?
vale9001 Posted May 15, 2023 Author Posted May 15, 2023 For air is different. It was planned as an Amazon exclusive release. Then the early screens got great reaction so they decided to release It for only one month on theaters (It's already on prime video). So the fact It made 51M domestic and 90M domestic seems good. I don't think it's a bomb.
