Air fares are rising at more than twice the rate of inflation

Regardless of how many are struggling financially at least many people aren't as bad off as they claim to be. Or they're making reckless financial decisions in high amounts. I mean the demand for concerts, summer travel, everything is insane right now. Like there is almost nothing that doesn't sell out or gets close to selling out and summer travel bookings (Why is flying in the summer so expensive? Cheap flights can be scarce (usatoday.com), Why the surge in summer travel airfare, hotel prices won't slow down (cnbc.com)) are very high, with flights/workers being low. High demand, low supply will do that. Even though lots focus on how many are struggling, a lot of people are also very well off or reckless and willing to pay. So why not charge if they will pay it?

Yes, in most cases rail can't do international, but national flights are still a thing and they are in no way a good substitute for public trains the way some people would like us to think for a numebr of reasons, the rising costs being one of them.

The US should absolutely invest in a true high speed rail system. There are obviously some routes where flying will always make more sense, but there are so many routes that could almost be entirely replaced by train. People always mention that no one would take a train from New York to Los Angeles so it doesn't make sense but ignore all the connections in smaller regions. Miami-Orlando, Atlanta-Charlotte, Houston-Dallas, Chicago-Detroit, Seattle-Portland etc. Even something like New York to Chicago (4-6 hours) would be popular.

Unfortunately, there'd be so many challenges from the airlines and property owners that I don't think there will ever be a true system. The US refuses to advance.

With a comment like this you're not even worth being stuffed into the tiny cages they subject poor chihuahuas into on flights :jonny5:

Definitely Credit Card debt. Also, some people get vacations on payment plans.

That is how I feel it is sad. Like I get it sucks but young people make such reckless decisions and then blame everyone else for struggling sometimes

This. A lot of people I know have a "f-k it, we ball" attitude post-lockdown

I agree with @Attitude a lot of people are flying using credit card debt. Post-covid its fomo + culture of debt, which the last i read is the highest since, alas pre-market crash in 2008, ****'s probably gonna hit the fan again soon.
