Saintlor Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 It seems like so many people are rich these days so I guess that's why companies will increase the prices of things like this-- since there are many people that will pay it
KFC Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 The aviation industry has always been incredibly greedy, even more so than virtually any other industry
Zoe_ Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 Good. Let's go back to gave classy people fly. Not this trailer park, hoodrat trash that we get.

But, yes, I had to fly last minute for a funeral, and prices were insane. Like I could have flown to the other side of the world for less money.

Bosque Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 Not surprising considering the demand for air travel is higher than it has ever been. Another area where the push for environmentalism has been completely useless because at the end of the day, people only care about cheap flight tickets

AMIT Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 But I was told airplanes are a viable and better substitute for public high-speed rail trains?
Flanders Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 Flying used to be ridiculously cheap before the pandemic. The prices we have now are more reflective of the actual costs. On a personal level it sucks but I’m the grand scheme of things this is good. Especially for the environment

But for real. I think the tweet was in flights in general. Rail doesn’t exactly work for international travel in every case.

Yes, in most cases rail can't do international, but national flights are still a thing and they are in no way a good substitute for public trains the way some people would like us to think for a numebr of reasons, the rising costs being one of them.

chessguy99 Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 The reason behind this is the pandemic. During the pandemic, the airlines laid off the majority of their employees. When things started to get back to normal, they only brought back a small percentage of them, mainly due to the uncertainty different COVID variants possibly causing another major outbreak. Soon they discovered they could get by with this smaller staff, and instead of bringing back all their employees, they ran with the leaner staff. Less flights meant they'd have full planes and could charge more for the fare. It's a pure greed motivation behind this and won't get better any time soon.

Keep in mind that the ticket fares of these high-speed trains can also be many times more expensive than air fares between two destinations on different continents

Vixen Eyes Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 now this makes a bit more sense (timestamp 10:08 through to the end) (she had a date to preform in Delaware (i think) for her tour but flights were delayed and couldnt find new flight tickets so she had to postpone that location's date)
ZIVERT Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 I will never understand why it can cost close to $400 for a round trip ticket between NYC and Toronto for example, but in Europe I can fly between cities for less than $50

I'm not sure about trains, but for airlines, I know fares get more expensive, the heavier the plane gets, and therefore the more fuel it needs to fly. This is why first bookings are always much cheaper but also more restricted.
