Of course it would be wild to you presuming you're American. I'm not trying to defend use of arms in case of shooting but in celebratory context it is used for means no other than to signify family or mob's euphoria and joy. Shooting up to sky is done so others in surrounding hear the unfiltered, cue the unfiltered joy that their son/daughter is entering adulthood, marriage etc. Might sound savage and  astounding from your own POV and I totally get that. You need to keep in mind mass-shootings are not a thing in Serbia and arms are mostly associated with showcasing loud, thunderstorm-like celebratory cheerful mood - equal to fireworks which they have also adopted in their culture as a Western celebratory custom with both being loud and omnivisible. Cultural thing which has so many loopholes as to where it can backfire - which rest assure has happened, mostly uninvited for.

Not y’all believing Vucic.. What a delusional thing to do. He CLEARLY won’t disarm anything and is only saying this because of the backlash he’s receiving recently. His nationalistic politics and the people he was around for 30 years since 90s are the sole reason people in Serbia are armed in the first place.

Exactly. He’s a person who’s been in favor of militarization for years. Now people believe that Serbia is more progressive than western countries because of his populism. Which is silly.

There were already strict gun control laws in Serbia before the shootings. No one cared to follow them. I mean, it was forbidden for children to enter shooting ranges and somehow no one stoped the father from bringing his son and teaching him how to shoot. That child became the school shooter we know all know about.

The problem is much bigger, and Vučić doesn’t care about it. That’s why he does nothing to solve real problems. Mainly because he is the part of those problems, and those problems help him to stay in power. There is a large violence culture in Serbia and he’s been feeding it for 30 years. There is no way he would let go of his power to disarm the people.

Femicide is happening all the time in Serbia (15 women killed in 2023 by their husbands and other family members), and people have been asking for something to be done. Government never cared to even address the issue.

What would probably happen is that some people will hand over the arms they have and some people close to Vučić and Vučić himself would profit, from corruption and continued sale of arms to Ukraine. Moreover, no one can guarantee that the police would actually do anything to follow new laws. After all, the father of the second shooter is in the military, if I’m not mistaken.

Even if announced measures succeed, there will still be people with illegal weapons and they can still continue mass shootings. The weapons are the problem, of course. No one should have them. However, there is much more problems that need to be solved if you want violence to stop. People in Serbia know nothing about mental health, and the government doesn’t care about changing that. As long as people don’t learn that it’s okay to seek help, violence is bound to continue.

Most of the weapons are leftover from the war and not registered. :rip:  How exactly is Vucic going to do that? He is less capable than Donald Trump.

Yes, but he did not mean it.

The Serbian Constitution forbids death penalty from ever being brought back. He knows it. He’s a lawyer. He just wants to scare the nation and appease people who believe the boy should be killed, and there is a lot of them. He wants to appear strong and ruthless.

He says that the Prime Minister (the one that should be in power but actually works for him) said that’s not possible. And he blames the foreign conventions for forbidding the death penalty. That way when the child is released (he can’t be prosecuted by Serbian law because he’s still not 14), he won’t be the one to be blamed, because he wanted to punish him, but he couldn’t because of some western conventions and the Prime Minister.

Spoiler

I hate him
