mystery Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 CNN: Eight children killed as boy allegedly opens fire at Serbian school Eight children have died after a schoolboy allegedly opened fire in an elementary school in the Serbian capital Belgrade, the country’s government-owned news agency reported Wednesday. A security guard was also killed, Tanjug reported. A seventh-grade student – typically aged 12 or 13 – was arrested. The Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement on Facebook that it was informed at 8.40 a.m. local time (2.40 a.m. ET) that a school shooting had occurred at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in Vračar, an upscale area of the Serbian capital.

igninton Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 (edited) We're becoming so used to hearing this on the news lately but it never gets any less shocking. My thoughts are with the families. 8 minutes ago, Hurem said: Poor kids and their parents They better investigate how he got the firearms Serbia ranks third in the world in gun ownership per capita and firearms may be owned with a permit. M.R. Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 As far as I can remember less than a km from that school is a mural dedicated to a war criminal that police is guarding. Serbia is a failed state on all fronts.

After a war the process of disarmament of the civil population is key and it was awfully done in the region. This is an indirect consequence of that but there are also many direct and serious consequences. We'll see the same in Ukraine I'm afraid.

Navy4Life Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 (edited) I’m not surprised since children mental health (especially when it comes to boys) is a taboo topic in Serbia (and Balkan countries in general). After years of pressure and not dealing with emotions, stuff like this is bound to happen. Edited May 3, 2023 by Navy4Life
Bloodflowers. Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 The parents of that kid who killed innocent children should be arrested and in jail. If they were decent parents, something like this would never happen.
visions Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 (edited) RIP to all those children. My thoughts are with all their friends and family. 12 minutes ago, Navy4Life said: I’m not surprised since children mental health (especially when it comes to boys) is a taboo topic in Serbia (and Balkan countries in general). Plenty of places in the world have awful access to mental health care, yet they don't go to schools and kill 8 other children because they have more sensible laws around gun control. I'll always be a huge advocate for mental health, but the priority here is having stricter gun laws across the world. Edited May 3, 2023 by visions

That’s why we don’t have these shootings often. There is a great number of illegal guns leftover from the war. The main issue here is mental health with children being a complete taboo. I have personally witnessed children (mostly boys) getting punished/penalized/ridiculed when trying to express emotions or worries they have. Edited May 3, 2023 by Navy4Life

I spoke too soon and underestimated the complexity behind it, sorry. A right wing talking point around this subject is the immediate blame on mental health to distract from the actual problem which is the guns. I judged too quick and assumed this was what you were attempting to do also. Along with mental health obviously needing to be addressed, in Serbia's case it seems like there is a need to address the leftover possession of guns in homes that are clearly dangerous.

Yeah that’s fine tbh. I understand why it would be immediate reaction to something like this. Tbh the leftover guns are concerning but they are rarely used in mass shooting situations like this (couldn’t even tell you when was the last time it happened). Unfortunately they are often used in domestic violence situations and Serbia has a huge number of femicides.
lestat111 Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 his father had 2 guns, legally, locked in sef, but boy knew the code to open in sadly..
greeneyedsoul Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 Horrible news. Iskrena sućut obiteljima i prijateljima nastradalih. :(
greeneyedsoul Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 Apparently the shooter can't be prosecuted because he's not 14 yet.
Genius1111 Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 From CNN Quote The mother of the 13-year-old Belgrade shooting suspect has been arrested, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said at a news conference on Wednesday. The suspect would be placed in a special psychiatric institution, Vucic added. “You see that he do not know what he did or show remorse,” Vucic said.
Genius1111 Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 (edited) From CNN Teenage suspect: A 14-year-old student is in custody following the incident. He was arrested by authorities in the school's yard, who gave his initials as KK. He is thought to have used his father's weapon in the attack. The suspect called police himself, told them what he did and waited in the schoolyard to be arrested, Belgrade's Police Chief Veselin Milić said at a news conference Wednesday. Jon Snow Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 mind you that something like this has never happened in Serbia before and I don't remember it happening anywhere in the region it's been a long day and it's been getting worse as more things unfolded
Aethereal Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 All of this could've been prevented with stricter gun laws and by stopping bullying. RIP to the children.
ChandlerBing Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 Another mass shooting in Serbia, the killer is on the run currently. 8 people dead so far...
