What is the appeal of sports..? Enlighten me.

There's none.

It's a social construct. Companies profit from it, so they keep shoving it onto each new generation.

We need to get out of this bubble until it's too late!

For people?

Basically is a substitute of war. The social routine (going to stadiums, the flags, rooting for your countries/ team, beating an enemy) Is the same of acclaiming gladiators or soldiers when they come back from war.

Also the narrative around the sports men being Heroes (they are often described by media as superior kind and immaculate persons) and about face your destiny, face the challenges  etc...

It's basically the cult of war in the Classical World.

As entertainment live show you can understand what can be really spectacular about It: nothing is so unprendictable.

Not every match is at the same level but no music event, not oscar and anything can became something you have to watch live than a world Cup final: again It's like a final battle in a war, Who Is gonna "die", Who Is gonna survive?. What Is gonna happen? It Is over or the fate can still change?.

It's the narrative about the Destiny of a nation. Now It's just a match and if you lose no one is gonna destroy your country, so you can forget soon about that but for two hour a country can live the same of emotion of an ancient roman.

They like to stan and root for the different teams/players like how we stan pop girlies hihi. It is a really strong source of community and good way for them to stay fit while having fun so I'm not mad at it

Hot men playing with balls

That’s why my cousin Moochie watches :biblio:

It gives you an actual outlet to let some competitiveness out , hang out with people in real life , and keeps you physically fit.

All of which judging pop girls on an obscure internet forum does NOTHING of.

I wasn't into sports when I was younger, but as I became an adult, I started to watch the games that were hyped up a lot. Believe it or not, sports is just as big in pop culture as music is. If you want to keep up with pop culture, you have to watch sports.

it's actually really enjoyable if you sit down and watch. The NBA playoffs start tonight if you want to check it out.

I’ve noticed that it’s such a common conversation starter for a lot of straight men. Many of them just assume everyone watches sports. I find it hard to hold conversations with a lot of straight men at my work place because of this. It’s almost as if they don’t have any special interests apart from sports and cars. Like the fact that a “straight bar” is basically just a sports bars. Like

I have never been interested in sports but tbh I think a general cultural interest in sports/physical games is more or less human nature, tons of ancient cultures also had various forms of what we’d nowadays call sports where people partake in either individual or group activities centered around some type of physical activity and people would watch as sort of a community event. Example being, of a more violent nature, in Rome with the gladiator games in the coliseum.  As long as humans exist, sports will exist as well.

My particular reason for not being interested is because physical activity just does not click for me on a more complex level. You can explain the rules of football and soccer to me 10x over and it will fly right over my head. I can only handle basic ass physical acts like… running. Playing catch. Riding a bike. Etc, lol. I had/have a lot of motor issue skills, which really set me back too. I couldn’t keep up with the other guys. I’m also not an aggressive/competitive type of person, which you kind of need to be to thrive in sports. A lot of humans thrive with these personality traits in sports.

playing sports with your friends can be a fun bonding activity, and there's a huge variety so there's something for almost everyone

watching them? i don't get the appeal either, it looks super boring. especially the most popular ones like football and ice hockey are a massive snoozefest and always have been to me

I'm curious in learning more about it but it seems so overwhelming given there's so much to learn. Do you have any recommendations like a gateway or something to know more about it?

Start on Twitter. The biggest sports games usually trend at #1 on Twitter. Whatever is trending on there, watch it and keep doing it. You’ll catch on. That’s what I did.

You find a sports character that appeals to you and you root for them to battle and win over the enemies. It's fun. Not every sports is appealing though, I only watch pro wrestling, Survivor and football (especially during World Cup)

IDK but the fact that some "men" beat up their gfs/wives because their favorite team lost a game is insane to me :biblio:

It is a substitute for the gladiatorial activities and wanting to belong. Similiar to stanning pop stars and musical artists, sports are fun to watch. Some do it for national pride (usually world events), living vicariously through the stars or idolizing the players. If you play video games, you would understand the appeal.

I love watching rhythmic gymnastics, playing badminton & football however I hate watching cricket or anything with a bat and ball. Those types of sports are boring however the worst is golf. It is like watching paint dry, playing it is fun, watching it sucks.

It's fun. Each sports team basically has a stanbase. Their stats are like charts. If y'all weren't so anti-masc you'd find it entertaining.

As others have pointed out, it's a variant of stan culture. It's also nice to see where you're from getting represented. I grew up in Oklahoma where there is a huge football culture - it's always nice to see our team doing well since our state isn't well-known outside of sports.

I find some sports more fun to watch than others though. Other than the NCAA I like to watch Formula One and FIFA.
