Should all sentences be lengthy? In western countries like France and the US, the justice system should be rehabilitative rather than punitive in most cases. However, in all cases, it's generally the opposite. If you have a criminal record for, say, marijuana possession, your life is functionally over. And neoliberal leaders are okay with that.
