Good. Bill Clinton was responsible for enriching and empowering China while crippling America's manufacturing. Biden should not repeat his mistake. China must be crushed before it's too late.

I wonder what the Chilean far-right will do when they realize that even the Americans are going to ditch neo-liberalism. :coffee:

honestly this kind of thinking is where the whole world is going, whether you agree with it or not. the neoliberal establishment is giving 00s energy its outdated.

globalism peaked before the pandemic and now it's in full retreat. countries are going to focus on self reliance to avoid these tragic supply line crises

It's all nice and dandy untill you need chinese gadgets for your kitchen :rainy:

There's also the discussion of - can you have a Chinese-style economy that's centralized and protectionist...without a Chinese style political system?

What will US politicians do when the lobbyists who own them say their corporate leaders do not want to decouple from the Chinese economy and lose out on the profits made from cost savings on labor? How will potential profits via subsidies to offset such lost cheap labor work when there's bipartisan consensus in DC that the rich shouldn't pay more in taxes?

In America, if you cut spending by gutting entitlements, you lose the voters. But if you increase the budget by creating new taxes, you lose the billionaire donors ..

The man who tried to pass Build Back Better, student loan forgiveness, passed the Chips act and mortgage equity was supposed to be a neoliberal? :rip:

All presidents from Carter onwards have been neoliberal. Just like all presidents from FDR to Ford were New Dealers. It depends on the current consensus, and it looks like the consensus is about to change.

This is entirely logical (and always has been) as we move towards a world where right to pollute increasingly becomes currency.

Most neoliberals are also conservatives. Ronald Reagan - the father of modern conservatism - ushered America into neoliberalism through his free market and free trade emphasizing policies.

A welfare state is not at odds with neoliberalism - in fact, a welfare state where the benefits are largely coded as aid but serve more-so as government subsidies to privately-owned entities is fairly common in neoliberalism.

So citing an infrastructure bill that gave new subsidies and projects to largely private corporations, marginal student debt relief in a pandemic that still has not happened, etc. does not dispel the neoliberal status quo. But the CHIPS Act - solely done to stop China's rising economic status - is a protectionist policy showing such a shift.

But Biden is not advancing us out of neoliberalism, but regressing back to the protectionist norms that preceded it. Neither acknowledging the current issues of income inequality in America.
