These artists didn't have a currently succesful album to promote. Releasing Cruel Summer is compeletely pointless, it is not even guaranteed that it would increase its streams.

Those artist weren't in the middle of an era, Tayor's situation is different in my opinion.

Why give attention to a four year old album that's doing THAT good on it's own? Makes more sense to release Karma even tho is not as good as Cruel Summer.

I'm all for Karma becoming her summer single as it should, to represent the current era. And it's doing well at the moment.

 

I still think that Cruel Summer could be a Die for You for Taylor. Maybe after Karma's run. However it will probably be too late by then.

 

I'm torn, but since Midnights is the recent era, Karma would be the best option. Cruel Summer can be the hit that got away.
